Just a comment .... the ambiant temp makes absolutely no difference, it's all down to how long she's been left. She'll be hard to start if left 2 weeks, whether summer or winter !

Neville, remove that high-speed idle cam thingy you described. It has a coil spring, at the end of it, a pocket where the cam peg sits in. When set at the 20° mark, will run the engine at (a too high) 3000 RPM (to quickly burn off foul emissions). When heated, this spring expands and turns with it the peg and cam, this acts on the throttle linkage which should decrease the engine speed to more friendly levels.

Remove the device, unhook the peg from the spring, turn the spring about 180° (so it doesn't touch the peg) and reinstall. Keeps the looks, but deactivates this useless device.

Even before my rebuild, last year I drove it in pretty cold weather (around 0°C or 32°F). Started every time when left outside.

I'm not getting the edit menu for some reason, and this is quite the dishelved post on my part so far.

I meant to say temp outside. When the car is warm it obviously fires up the first time it cranks over.

My FI 308, no matter how long it sits or the temp, turns over 2-3 times and fires up everytime, still haven't figured that one out.

My carbed jeep is like this. If I let it sit a couple days it's a ••••• to get started, but eventually does. I think it's not delivering enough fuel after sitting awhile, gonne replace the carb with an Edlebrock I think. I say it's attitude just gives it more character.

Thanks for the replies guys ..... if it's just how she is, then I'm perfectly happy :-)

As long as it's not something that ought to be fixed, I'm more than happy to live with "perculiarities" ! As you say, Michael .... if I'd wanted something flawless and without character, I'd have bought a washing machine ...

Thanks
Nev :-)

Not just a 308 issue. Even in a warm garage if the TR sits for say a week, takes a couple turns on the start switch to fire up, but after that its fine. Drive every day it it almost starts just by thinking about it. Neveill you don't have a problem, you have exactly what you bought -- a ferrari

Nev, I have similar conditions when I start my carb. 308 GTS. When cold, I put the choke on all the way, hit the accell. a couple of times turn the key on and let the fuel pump up for about 10 to 15 secs. After that I start it and it never fails to start but she will balk a little for the first minute or so and I have to play with the acell. and the choke lever a bit. Then she resumes high idle and smoothes out. I think this is her nature. When warm she runs great.

Neville, welcome to the Wonderful world of Carbed 308s! My 308 acts the exact same way yours does. If I drive my car everyday it will start great in the morning but if I let it sit for a few days it takes a few turns. This is common to carbed cars and is normal. FI cars will fire right up and hold their idle. I know a few gentlemen that replaced their carbs, switched to electronic ignition, etc. and it didn't make a difference. Their 308s still started the same way. When I attempt to back out of my moderately steep driveway when my car is cold it has a hard time backing out. When my car is warm it backs out with no trouble at all.

If I run my UK 308 carb every day, then she starts from cold on the button, with no hesitation and a lively "brummm !"

If I dont run her for a few days, then she's a bit grumpier, maybe stalling once, and idling roughly until she's a bit warmer (then she runs like a dream)

If I dont run her for a couple of weeks, she's a right b**ch !! She'll fire and try to run each turn of the key, but will stall instantly, taking 3 or 4 or 5 attempts to get her running, then she'll be all grumpy and lumpy, spitting back through the carbs, until she's been running a couple of minutes.

This does not vary, regardless of how I try to start her, though Ive found the following to be best : let the fuel pumps run for 30-60 seconds, a couple of hefty pumps on the accelerator pedal, no choke, and depress the accelerator pedal ever so slightly, then turn the key. Messing around with any variation of this doesn't seem to make any difference. When she fires and starts to try and run, it doesn't matter how much gas I give her, she'll still stall.

She's regularly serviced, and recently had the carbs set up properly and balanced by a good Ferrari mechanic (after a bit of crud got stuck in a cold run jet on one carb). All the usual carb checks were done, e.g. float level. She's always done this (since I bought her a year ago)

Now, I've heard that the carb cars can be a bit grumpy to start when cold, so is this normal or not ? And what can I look for ?

The only other thing to add is the fact that the last time I had the air filter cover off, I noticed that the cold start cam thing that sits bang between the 4 carbs (moves into position when you prod the acc. pedal once) wasn't doing diddly squat (the cam lobe wasn't moving the actuator linkages). So I adjusted it so the lobe did open the carbs a little bit, and that made it MUCH worse !!! So I backed it off again, so it wasn't doing anything !

Not an earth shattering problem cos she does start eventually, and I know the standard response will be "well, drive her every day !" but anyone any ideas ?

Thanks !
Nev
