I'd try TRutlands.

Just use a sharp pick of some kind to remove the circlip. A Gudgeon pin and a wrist pin are one in the same. Be sure you mark which direction the piston goes on the rod.

I have the circlips at the ends of the pins fit into a slot. I believe they are full floating but they need to be spread a bit before the pins come out. That is what I want to know, how to spread that circlip properly. Is it with a tool?

Wrist pin? I always knew them as Gudgeon pins? Are they of a significantly different design on F motor hence nomenclature?

Do yours not have the "Circlips" in the ends of the pins? I believe they are full floating, at least mine were. If not I would recommend you take them to an auto machine shop and let a Pro do it. It is simple once you see it done but easy to screw up a good piston.

One more question

What is the correct method to remove the wrist pin?

Heat it up or what???

If you go for 1 used piston measure your bore at the top and bottom of of the clyinder. Find out what Ferrari recommends for clearances and have Ed measure each of his pistons to get the correct clearance. Choose which ever pistons Ed feels not only looks best but fits your bore the best.

Thanks Edward, I was thinking of the end gap, rather than the ring to land clarance. A replacement piston appears the only good solution. Be sure to check the replacement piston weight relative to the others.

I think he is saying that the piston ring width on one piston is wider than the others.

Mitchell,

All ring sets should be the same style. If the gaps on one ring set are out of spec, I would measure the id of all bores to determine if the bores are approximately the same. If the bore with excessive ring gap is larger than the others, I'd replace that liner. If all bores, are approximately the same, then contact your supplier and ask for a replacement ring set for that bore.

My parts book only shows one size piston available for the 81/82 308 part # 107183 so therefore there should be no difference for each individual bore. It also shows only one cylinder bore or sleeve part # 103588, with an 81mm bore.

Remember each bore is machined to match each piston; always replace same piston into bore it came from. When buying over-size pistons always number each piston and tell machine shop to bore tolerances to coresponding piston #. Using a used pistom from another car (sounds like this might already be the case for the 1-off piston you have?) may not meet factory specs. Probably not a big issue with street engines in reallity, but something to think about

I just happen to have a few good used pistons that fit an 82 308 that can be had for a bargain if they will fit your application. Let me know.

Can you find a clean used piston and if so how much? If its reasonably cheap, I would go that route. Bonus: then you would have a piston to use as a neat paperweight!

The custom ring set sounds like a good idea too. If a piston is more than $100 or so, I would probably do that.

Got to cleaning my pistons yesterday and noticed that one set of rings was totally different from the others? Looked closely and the previous bonehead (as opposed to me, the present bonehead) had machined the gaps to be larger than stock. So my 8 new ring sets fit all 7 but not the last piston. WHY would anyone do that????

My choices are ... get a custom ring set made by total seal (probably $25 or so). Or, reuse that one old ring set. Or, get a clean used piston and use that with the new ring set.

What do you suggest?
