Stephen, by resetting the parking brake cable, do you mean disconnecting parking brake cable, change out rear brake pads and then reattach the parking brake cable? |

I used Ferado (spelling?)pads from Foreign Cars International in North Carolina. I found that I had to reset parking brake cable to get the back brakes to work correctly. Took the opporunity to clean the pulleys and it works much better. Amazing what clean and a little fresh lubricate will do!!! |

I just want to add a small comment here -- the replacement 308 rear caliper plug that Jeff found is very similar to (if not exactly the same as) the stock 308 rear caliper plug so it has the advantage of minimum (unsprung) weight, but also has the disadvantage of the internal hex drive being smaller than the thread OD (i.e., stripping out the internal hex drive again is a possibility). The replacement part from Performance Products is a bit of a different beast and has an external 10mm hex drive as shown in the figure below which improves its reuseability (with the minor weight penalty):
I don't have strong feelings either way, but if you stay with the stock-like plug you might want to get a few spares for the future. If anyone would like a copy of the 2-page FML article on this subject shoot me an email.

Just replaced them on my 77. You can get a nice functional replacement at MSCDirect.com (part no. 84434828)Put a copper washer under it. http://www.mscdirect.com/mscProductSearch.process?RestartFlow=t&RowsPerPage=15&searchmanufpartno=&dispmanufpartno=&operator=AND&QuickFlag=1&Merchant_Id=1&query=84434828&search_cat=K |

Yeah, I too would like to know what year, etc, 914 calipers we're working with. I just noticed my rear pads are pretty thin and should be replaced soon. It would be great if they can be ordered/bought through a Porsche supply place like Tweeks, thanks |

Yes, there are bolts that fit in. I have them on mine. I am not sure who sells them though. I believe the new ones are stainless steel. The rear calipers are the same as used on Porsche 914s. Steve M. gave me this info on where to purchase them. 914 Rear Caliper Plug Performance Products 800-423-3173 Part # 4999 |

Well gentlemen, we're getting into it now. I've changed the brake pads and the fronts were a piece of cake. The rears should have bben too had it not been for some gorilla who manged to strip out the allen heads in the metal inboard caps. I got them off and finished the pad replacement without totally destroying them but would like to replace them if possible. I've read on 308.FAQ that this is not an unusally problem. Any solutions? Thanks again. I'll have the steering rack redone. |
