Stacy the Magnetic Sleeve (slips on dist. shaft) needs to be machined out to slip over the dist. cam. It needs to be a honeymoon fit. Also you need to increase the depth so that the magnets line up with the pick up module (no number just "Module 2" identified on the box). Also you need to take about .030in from the top of the sleeve and drill out the hole to fit over the dist. shaft.I mounted the pick-ups on an .125 in plate that mounts into the dist. base where the points mounted. When you figure out the math it should all line up. Need about a .015 to .030 air gap between the pick up and the sleeve. The trick I need to get is to mount the pick up to trigger when the rotor hits #1 (critical). Once this is done the second pick up is mounted at 45 degrees and 5-8 are in sync. Just time 1-4 as usual and you're done. Steve

I have had the Norwood conversion done on my 77 308, and while the up front cost of $1200 seems high, down the road when it's tune-up time is where this conversion more than makes up for it....
Price 2 new Ferrari dist caps, rotors, plug wire set, which you will still have to buy, Compared to the Norwood conversions single Chevy dist cap and ford rotor, with any plug wires you care to use, like 9mm racing wire...
And I can get a cap and rotor at any NAPA store for easy weekend tune-ups for around $30.00....
I had thought about one of the direct systems like Nick sells, which IMHO is probably the best way to go... But I happen to like the look of the single distributor on the 308, looks more like the Euro model, rather than a 308 with an obvious conversion.
No matter which system you go with, if you use your car as a driver, it will be well worth it to update the ignition.

My 2 cents worth...

I have the Petronix on my Datsun Race car, it works great, is easy to work with and so far has had flawless reliability.

I talked to Norwood Ferrari in Texas and they do a single distributor conversion that is "top shelf" but it costs $1200. A little rich for me. For that money I prefer the electromotive.

Steve,

I think the idea of putting two pickups in one distributor is a good idea. This way you only have to take one distributor apart and the two banks of cylinders will always be in sync. It seems to me that you could do this with either the pertronix or the crane system. Can you tell me what the pertronix part number is that you are using and what type of modification you had to make to the magnetic rotor.

Thanks,
Stacy

I have never installed one on a Ferrari but the company makes a good dependable product and I use one on my Corvair as do a lot of other people and I have never heard of a failure. They also get hotter in a Corvair than they would in other cars so dependability should not be a problem.

Stacy I'm going to do this over the winter on my 77 308GTB. I had 2 pertronix units from a year ago and had talked to the tech. guys at pertronix. I've done the modifications to the mag. rotor and have mounted the 2 pick up units on an alum. plate. I need to align this in the distributor. I got this suggestion from a guy in calf. that does these conversions. If I can't get it working (alignment is key) I'll send the dist. to the shop in calf. that does the conversion. The cost they gave me was $400 but this is done professionally and the whole thing is pretty clean. All you need to do is run a new pair of hotter coils and eliminate the 2 resistors and you have a super system with no outside components to mount. Whole system looks stock. The folks in Calf. who do the conversion is "Don King of Elite Auto" Tel# 310 606-5695. Give him a call. Steve

It is time to convert my 308 to a breakerless ignition. The Crane XR700 seems to be popular but has anyone tried the pertronix system?
