I would check the clutch also. Could be the cable is about to let loose or has stretched and you are not fully disengaging. Dave |

I'd have a quick look at the easy things first: inboard and outboard "flexbloc" bushings, adjustment coupling, and the shifter case/rod action, before resorting to dropping the gearbox pan -- but that may ultimately be necessary if all the external items are OK. One thing I like to see on a well serviced/assembled car is that the relative positions of critical components, like the shift shaft adjustment coupling/nuts and the related shafts, are marked after adjustment/tightening -- JMO. |

Greg, Difficult to diagnose over a long distance but certainly sounds like the clutch isn't fully disengaged. I would also check the linkage for wear. I would wager the clutch is the issue. Could be dragging enough to cause this type of problem. |

Greg. sounds like shift rod allignment problem, too much 2nd,not enough 1st.its adjustable right in front of the coupler.plus make sure the rubber bushing in coupler housing isnt wasted while your down there, it will tighten up some slop... |

Thanks for your help. I'm going to take a look and see. Hopefully it is just an alignment problem. I can shift into the spot that 1st is supposed to be, but it just doesn't go into gear. |

I had a problem with my 84 not going into 1st gear but went into all other gear with no problem. I had to drive home starting off in 2nd gear. I brought it in to the dealer and it was just an adjustment, about a hundred and fifty dollars. Hope yours is the same minor problem as mine was. I dont think its the synchros cuz you wouldnt have been able to downshift into 1st if it was the synchros. Does it shift into reverse and 1st when the car is off? |

email our fellow Ferrarichat member Ed Gault. (Sounds like a linkage problem to me, but I have no experiance with this yet.) Can you jack up the car, remove the belly pan, and look? |

Sounds like an alignment thing to me. I can't see it being a clutch or synchro problem. |

I Have an '85 308 QV and experienced some problems with the gears this weekend. First, it started with not going into 1st gear unless you downshifted into it before stopping. Then, after shifting into second gear, it was stuck there. The only way I could get it out of 2nd was to remove the gate plate after cutting the car off and then shifting it out. Now it seems to go into reverse only when it feels like it and won't go into 1st. Is this a clutch problem or maybe a synchro/transmission problem? |
