Not trying to make judgment on which make is better and I do agree for the money the BMW is a better built car having to own a 95 M3 I really loved how solid it was. But if you are looking for an overall better top of the line luxury car, the CL600 is arguably the best sedan in the world, this remark is made from a lot of magazine reviews but it isn't that, this is from my experience. You have to drive one to see for sure, yes the M5 is a great car , I've worked on one and driven one from a good customer of mine. But in reality of road driving and pure comfort the CL is the best luxury sport coupe in the world till this very day. Go check one out at the dealership if you are lucky to find one. Some would argue but without the experience of driving one you can't make a true judgment and you can bet when I test drive cars, I drive them very hard to test the power, handling, and braking, then I look at all the amenities throughout the car including materials used. I could go on and on but understand what I'm trying to say...

I agree that BMW is way ahead of all other makes in build quality. My 2000 M5 is built like a tank with no rattles, squeaks or other signs of poor quality. The leather inside is top notch too. And, according to the Insurance Institute, the BMW 5 series is the safest car in the world by a large margin.

nah, it was made in Bremen factory, Germany, I picked it up from there. I think its because the SLK is a lower range 'cheap' mercedes. The bumpers on it were paper thin.

The CL's and SL's are very expensive cars so I would expect that build to be pretty well exemplary. I'm suprised the M series are not well built, although thinking about it they arent too expensive lower down in the engine size range (I think we get much smaller engine capacity options here in Europe?).

The SLK has put me off MB for a good few years till time heals. I think the BMW build quality is leagues ahead, in fact in terms of 'build quality' I have yet to come across anything close.

No regrets for what I did, in fact I did it to refresh the interior since it was tan an in old shape, it was redone in blk & yellow with race seats which were more than twice as light than the stock plus it gave me much more legroom. What I did to this car was mentioned months ago. Fixed problems with slow working power window and non working power mirrors. The car used cheap switches.. I usually don't tear down cars unless things were to be improved and benefitted and I also learn a lot of things that others can benefit.. hey, someones got to do it. Fortunately I never had any regrets of dissasembling cars and putting them back together since this is part of what I do im my business. Now ya know...

Any pics of the progress? Why did you tear it down? Where are you getting the replacement fitments?....so many questions. You should post some of the more difficult portions, you know the ones that you say to yourself "huh if I had only known that before I ripped the s##t out of it", on the service section. I'm preparing to post a document for the window motor rehab on my 308.

Sorry to hear that Dave, it's the same with my ML55 probably due to being made in the states. Is your SLK made in the states? My CL 600 is built very solid in every way and the fit and finish is the best I've seen but you pay for it.

I have removed the interior to bare metal including the doors, if you have questions relating on how to.. just ask me, how to fix , ask me, modify and make better, ask me. did it done it and this is to interior related things. The car is a basic build and wasn't made to be taken apart too many times... cheap build what else... sorry fellas it's true...
