Greg -- the shifter housing itself is a 2-piece aluminum casting that when bolted together forms the "bearings" for the shaft that rotates when you move the shift lever side to side -- perhaps a little lubrication is in order? (Also would give you a chance to relube the spring-loaded up-down motion of the shift lever -- is this also "sticky"?) -- it's all pretty clear on TAV.29 in 150/78. |

The shifter is probably not aligned properly and the shift finger inside the trans is not being allowed to slide cleanly between the shift forks to select the proper fork. The shifter has to be aligned in conjunction with the shifter gate in the console. |

I test drove an 83' QV the other day and noticed that its shifter was very smooth. In neutral moving it from side to side was very very easy. On my 78' 308 it is much more difficult and doesn't move very easy? Both cars go into the gears about the same speed but switching between them and when the shifter is moved it neutral are much different. What can cause this type if resistance in my shifter? Going into the gears is fine but when moving the shifter from gear to gear takes a little time it feels sluggish. When the car gets warmer it gets somewhat better. Any ideas on this would be helpful. The car can be just sitting there and I will move the shifter from side to side in neutral and on the QV was very quick from side to side with not much resistance but as I stated on my 78's takes more time to move it from side to side. Is there a rotating arm that gets stiff over time? Thanks. |
