Peter according the Forza 308 buyers guide the glass 308's are doing very well for value and of all the 308's probably will be the most collectible. Too bad the Ferrari purists shouted so loudly that the car should be metal and not fiberglass. The kitcar label I believe was tossed about and maybe a hint of reference to Lotus. Now we know how bad the rust problems are with the later 308's and the only people laughing are the body shops at 8grand a pop for a good saving paint job.

With regards to the vinyl luggage compartment zipper cover...saw this on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=598902675

Done business with them myself, and have been extremely satisfied. They even had a brand new exhaust grill that I've been searching for.

Italiancarparts sells them also, I believe.

Although glass 308's do not pull the premium dollars yet, they are the only 308 GTB's with real future collectible value. The glass was of such a high quality on these cars and the workmanship was superb by Ferrari standards.

Magoo: you said that I should seriously consider this guy. Do you mean I should buy or I shouldn't buy? :-)

I have a similar problem. My glove-box lid has three small tears on it. I put temporary patches on them to make it less noticeable. I've searched at various fabric stores for black vinyl and all of their grain patterns are different (the Ferrari's one is very even and consistent, unlike some vinyls who copy the natural grain of leather).

That's true Ed but the feel of the vinyl the grain effect and the type of double zipper is imporant if you are looking to keep the orig look. Otherwise, just as you say, take a flat piece of vinyl and a zipper which isn't rocket science.

I would bet that any competent trim shop could reproduce that cover. It ain't exactly rocket science. Just a flat piece of vinyl and a zipper.

Thanks Jeff, That is the guy. It is also my understanding that he does great work and the repro. looks exactly like the orig.. Vilamoura I would seriously consider this guy. Where the hell is my Hemmings Motor News?

Peter, This guy advertises like the Lone Ranger. I don't think that Re: Originals is it. He is always in Hemmings and advertises that he specializes in making the luggage compt. covers.

Magoo, tks for the information.
Edvar, the reason why I sent you the e-mail was exactly because the car is in Nederlands and probably you would have some informaton on it.
Tks for your help.

Hi! As you asked in your (private) email, I will look for some information about the car this evening. I know that this car is here in Holland and that it is for sale for EURO 33234 (see www.mobile.de; "PKW suchen"; search for "Ferrari" as Marke and "Niederlande" as Land).

The plates are French, so it was probably imported. I've seen the car at the "Italia a Zandvoort" event earlier this year. I will try to find some more info ....

Magoo, is it "Re-Originals"?

RE: The luggage compt. cover. There is a guy in Hemmings who advertises under "FERRARI PARTS" and he makes a aftermarket exactly like the orig. and his prices, I have been told, are very reasonable. Sorry I don't have the book right now to give you the name. Check it out.

I would say that the rear spoiler is an add-on. It has also been updated with 16" wheels and I do believe the car should have the vinyl boot in the back. Not difficult to get a replacement, but like anything Ferrari, it will be outragous for an original one and plain expensive for a aftermarket replacement. The boxes do look like ignition boxes, interesting that there are two of them since the car has a single distributor...

Looking at the picture with the boxes in question, there appears to be a non-factory wire wrapped with tape leading from the back to the distributor. Are most likely ignition boxes.

Not sure about the boxes, but it is true that only the QVs had the spoiler. I think the spoiler looks good, but some say it takes away from the original pure lines of the 308, to each his own I guess.

Neville, very good question. I do not know it either.May be Andrew knows.

Two other points :

1) What are the two electronic boxes in the boot area ? Some kind of add on ?

2) I thought that the black rear spoiler / aerofoil thing was only available on later (QV) cars ? Not on the early cars ?

Anyone ?

The cars all originally shipped with a single pipe. See Keith Bluemel's "Original V8" - I don't have a copy here so this is from memory. When the cars started shipping to the States the switch was made to the 2+2 exhaust configuration and from that point on all 308s were as such.

The engine/box in the glass cars is identical to to the Dino 308 GT4. There is notthing special to look out for over and above any other Ferrari - cambelt, service history etc etc.

I can't answer for sure the question about the vinyl cover over the rear luggage area. Check the gallery section for photos of my car. I have a photo of my 1976 car from 1977(I think) and that cover IS present so I am assuming it was there from new.

Tks very much for your useful answers.
Here I upload a photo of the back and the engine of the car I am dealing.
Is this exaust system the original one? Usually they have 2+2 outlets ?
Has the engine any alert sign that I have to pay a special attention?
Originally don't they have a cover over the back boot?

The glass 308's have a very very good reputation for fit and finish of the body. Being a Lotus owner for many years now, I can tell you those cars are well thought of in the "glass" arena. Too bad the Ferrari community at the time didnt recognize the fine work Ferrari did, and now alot of them suffer with rust on the 308's made later.

It was probably me that Peter is referring to. I know of no negative reasons against a glass car other than than they are the oldest 308s around. A euro spec one would be the best if you are allowed one where you live - dry sump, a lot lighter, circa 255BHP and they don't have those butt-ugly US bumpers(personal opinion only). My car was clipped on the left rear quarter on the track by an E-type several years ago. The glass there had to be redone and the results was superb. There are 3 glass cars in NZ and none show any signs of 'stress crack' and all have no issues with body panels.

Cheers

There was someone that posted recently who has a 'glass 308. The pictures are posted in the "Showroom" section and it is a very early car.

Vilamoura, I don't have one but I have not heard that many negatives about them. The one thing I would be concernd about, having had experience with the old fiberglass Vette bodies, is the stress crack problem. Does it exist with these cars and how smooth are the panels and where they join? I would do some research in those areas in particular. Other guys could give you more info. on that.
