David, Your assumption is exactly correct. There is a black plastic ring that is a spacer just behind the lens in the tach as well as the speedo.. It blocks the illumination of the bulbs. I guess they wanted it that way. Maybe Eds' rheostat terminal jump works. Tommy let us know. |

Tommy, I have the same problem; did the bulb upgrade and the tach was still dim compared to the speedo. I believe that the problem lies in the distance between the face of the tach and the back of the gauge. There is not enough room for the light to get in to illuminate the face. Just a thought. Yours is out, so take a close look at whether this might be the cause.... |

Right now my guage cluster is out of the car (along with the dash). I thought now is the time to do something while it's sitting on a workbench. I used the Italian Car Parts kit a few years ago. The speedo is as bright as it can be now, but the tach is so dim I thought one of the bulbs were bad (none were). I am going to jump the rheostat to see what I get and I'll let everybody know how it looks. |

Dr. Tommy, Herb just answered the question re: brighter dash lights. They were much brighter when he jumped the rheostat. Save your self some time on the Ferrari Club conversion. I did it and hardly noticed any difference at all. |

Where are you Herb, ED,? Didn't you have brighter dash lights when you jumped your dimmer rheostat? |

David you are exactly correct. They are the same bulbs and the same conversion. They do little or nothing to improve illumination. |

If you need to remove a bulb as a sample, try removing the ones on the clock or oil temp guages on the center console instead. The are the same. The ones in the kit if I am not wrong uses 4-5W bulbs. |

My understanding is that the "illumination update kit" from Italian Car Parts is identical to the bulbs listed in the FAQ on the Ferrariclub.com website. They also include a copy of their own instructions for installation as well. You can save yourself over $20 in product and shipping by just using the FAQ and buying the bulbs locally. |

For those who have problems with dash lights, have you tryed this? INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATION KIT ALL FERRARI 308 & MONDIAL MODELS: Have trouble reading your instruments at night? http://www.italiancarparts.com/accessories/accessories.html |

I have tried putting in a Halogen type bulb of about 10W and it is very bright. Not sure what are the implications as far as heat is concerned! Using for last 4 months. The only problem was that each bulb cost about US$10! |

Would anyone happen to know if there is any difference in these components or wiring between -86 and -89 328's? |

I have no problem at all in my 328 Dash Lights. The light is bright enough. May be it's because she is a 1989...? |

I guess so. Since mine is a GTS I hardly ever have the top on. Maybe Ed will respond and tell us how it worked for him? |

With the headroom of a 308/328, something like this would be better than a hard hat: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/arkatents/seepetmichea.html |

Hey Pauli, great idea. I had another thought. Wearing a miners hard hat with the light on top. Just have a switch on it and turn it on when ever you want to see the status of the instruments. |

I was thinking of clamping some kind of map/reading light to the edge of the instrument cluster... :-( |

Pauli, Ed did it. I haven't jumped the rheostat yet but he said it was better. I think the best idea is to carry a flashlight under the seat when you want to see the dash. |

Has anyone succesfully fixed the lights on a 328? I already tried bypassing the potentiometer completely and it was no different from when the potentiometer was set to least dim. |

Tommy, I did that conversion according to the ferrari club dashlight conversion. I didn't notice any difference hardly at all. Not worth the aggravation. Herb, now Ed, had a suggestion of jumping the rheostat which he did. I think that is the best idea since they are barely bright enough to see anyway. Check the keyword search under rheostat. |

We had a string on this a little bit ago. Do a keyword search. (Don't look under "dim bulb" you will probably just find a reference to me ) There was a disscussion about changing or jumping the dashboard potetiometer as well as changing bulbs. |

Does anyone remember the replacement bulb(s)part numbers that are brighter then the factory bulbs on the 308 QVs? |
