While electrical tape may work for the moment, you really should replace the extenders or use some special high voltage tape.

I always wondered why the extenders just have a spring-wire to connect, why wouldn't they make them to screw on to the plug with a matching threading. I don't like the fact that just a rubber boot is supposed to hold it firmly in place.

I noticed that you live in Palm Bay. My home is in Port St.John. I hope to have my 308 back together in time to see a Braves Preseason game at Disney driving my 308 down there fron S.C. where I work. Maybe I'll see you there or we can get together sometime.

When you said that you replaced the wires probably everyone assumed that you also replaced the extenders as well. The extenders give more problems than any other ignition item. That is why you did not receive any better answers to your problem.

I fixed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last night I installed the two Accel coils PN 8140 $28 ea. The chrome looks terrible under a 308 bonnet, maybe I will etch the chrome so I can paint it black. The low RPM Missing was still there. I then turned the lights off in the garage and found cylinder 8 had some nice blue light coming from a small crack in the hard plastic plug wire extender (The part that connects the plug wire to the plug). I wrapped 3in of electrical tape around the crack and everything started working perfectly!!

Today I am cruising around Palm Bay FL in my 308, it is nice to have her back. She has been broken for 8 months or so.

I pulled plug 4 and 8, both were dry and a very light brown (Looked fine to me).

Note: I just plugged my "Slow Down" Boxes back in today, and the 5-8 is lit while the car is running. These boxes had been unplugged since I purchased the car.

Note 2: I get about four times the flow out of the passenger side exhaust, as opposed to the driver side nozzle. Maybe I have a bad Cat. I was goung to drop in those $250 "Test" Pipes soon anyway, but I have been waiting for a used Borla (Anyone?)

The GTBi has electronic ignition, thus no points to fail. I could not find replacement rotors, so they are the orig ones with 13k on them. I always replace rotors in a situation like this, but they are not avb. The rotors look worn, but not burnt up, and the caps look great. I have not tried a plug cut and pull, it is now on my list to try. I have no way of checking super high voltages, my fluke might puke (rated at 600v max). Any suggestions as to how to check the coils other than pulling a plug and marveling at the blue light? I was thinking of flat out replacing them with Accele 42kv coils per a listing on this site.

You still have your points/condensor setups? Do '81's still use these or did they switch to electronic? How are the cap's/rotor's conditions? How do your plugs look? Try doing a plug-cut at around that 3000RPM to really see how the plugs look. Are you sure you're getting enough juice at the coils?

My 81 308GTBI with 13K Miles starts fine, runs fine at all RPM ranges, until it completely warms up. After warm up (<10-15min) it starts to misfire and sometimes backfires at rpms from idle to 3000. The backfires could be in the exhaust or the intake, I cant tell. The backfires are quite muffled. I have tried:

*Replacing plug wires with Magnetron wires.
*Replacing Plugs with Bosche Platinum

I always warm my car up for about 5-8min before each urban assault, and drive the car as it was meant to be driven, quite hard. It runs great at all rpms for the first 5-10 min of driving after 5-8min warm up, then it starts to miss a little (1-4 cylinders) under 3000 rpm, and runs fine above 3k. It misses about the same accelerating as it does at a constant rpm. Any help would be appreciated.
