The only difference made to the rack is to change the number of teeth on the pinion, we do it all the time on the race cars to suit different tracks. The effort would probably be negligable if they only go 1 tooth, but that would take out about 3/4 turn total lock to lock.

What's wrong with Atlantic? Granted I have used them only once (on my Silver Spur), but they did a fine job on that for me. I paid $400 instead of over $2000 for a new rack, and I couldn't find anyone else who would do it. Two years later and all is still well.

I imagine it takes quite a bit of effort to turn the wheel when the car is traveling slowly.

These quick ratio racks at Superformance would be nice for spirited driving, but I'm wondering how much effort they require driving at slower speeds?

I think the quik rack would be a good choice. I have heard bad things about Atlantic on the list. Not a very reputable business.

Superformance.co.uk do a "quick rack" .... anyone ever fitted one to a 308, and was it worth it ?

Becareful if you get your rack rebuilt. The company I used had terrible customer support. Atlantic Ent. advertises in Hemmings, etc. but don't use them. Not very good.

Steering racks are generally lubed for life, there is plenty inside for normal driving. Whatever the oem uses, it sure gets runny and leaks out, if you take the rack apart there is still plenty of lubricating left inside. Rebuilt racks are available for about 1/2 new cost. The main failurer that I have seen is that the passenger side bushing breaks up and allows the rack some side play. No source yet on the bushing I am afraid but it can be replaced. If you take the rack apart, don't lose or forget any of the shims.

The steering rack on a 308 is basically a sealed unit. When it leaks or malfunctions replace it. They can be removed and overhauled but cheaper to get a exchange unit. There is a plate on the drivers side of the rack. Located behind the L/F wheel. It is a tight squeeze but behind the frame after you remove the wheel you can remove the cap which has a light spring load inside it. Normally the fluid is up to the top of this cap. If it has been leaking, slowly, some of the guys on the chat line have topped off the rack with fluid through that cap.

Standard grease for the steering rack is BP Energrease FGL (G4937). My shop has put SKF in it. I think there was some kind of remove the rubber cover and turn the wheel left-right to push out the old grease-procedure. How to put in the new grease? Don't know. Not much of a help I'm afraid...

Ciao

Yeah, I know I ought to use the "search" facility more, it's just that every time I use it I get mad results back .... I've just searched for "steering rack oil leak lube" in the technical section, and got 467 pages back !!!! :-)

Neville, there was a thread on this topic about 4-6 months ago. Goto Keyword search and see what you can find. I am also wondering the very same thing as mine has an ultra-slow slow leak through the seal...but I would like to check it non-the-less.

I think that there is fluid in the steering box but I don't think you should have to refill it. If it is leaking then you should probably look into a new or rebuilt rack.

Is there any oil in a 308 steering rack, and does it need to be checked / changed / topped up at service time ? If so, where is the filler (and how do you get to it, coz I can't see it !!)

Also, as a side question, anyone know the torque settings for the 3 bolts on the thermostat housing ? (can't find it anywhere)

Thanks
Nev :-)
