That's right Magoo. If a bolt fell out, the crescent-shaped washer could swing out from centrifugal force and strike, making the noise. |

Also going with Peters' suggestion the drive shaft hex bolts may be coming loose. When one starts they all follow over time. |

J. Scott, take a look at the drive shafts. Something maybe from the shipping could be hanging on there still and be striking the case or chassis when they spin. Just a wild suggestion... |

Thanks all, no noise on turning just on acceleration and only for a few seconds at about 4000 RPM. Performance is good just concerned about the noise. Sounds a little like a pinging in an American car when a poor fuel is used, but I can tell that it isn't in the engine. Thanks for the help!!! |

The differential will make noise when turning, tighter turn, more noise if that is the problem. If the noise is in a straightline it won't be the diff.. Does it change with very slight pressure on the gearlever? |

Like Peter GT4, I think the limited slip clutches are dry and will take a littlr time to lube again. Hopefully you used a limited slip oil like Mobil 1 syn. gear case oil. |

You always have to be careful shipping cars. Most of the experiences I have had with shipping my cars have not been to great. |

The transporter was a company named Transcar out of Dallas. I think that they are a broker who contracted with an independent trucker. They didn't tell me this when we made the arrangements. It looks like the independent company is going to stand up and take responsibility. I will see on Tuesday when the adjuster visits. Hope no one else has this experience. The car was a mess when it arrived. Looks great now. About 4-5 hours of datailing. |

My Jeep with a trac-loc diff comes to mind. There was a guy with rear end chatter in a 308 that wrote an article somewhere. He wound up adding LSD-6 additive. The Ferrari has a self locking diff, I'm surprised that mine is so quite come to think of it. |

Sorry Steve, The crack was welded by a friend of mine who is a master Benz mechanic. Too bad he doesn't specialize in Ferrari's. I am going to get a new case though. The repair is temporary until the insurance pays off. |

Thank you for asking. I guess the fellow who put the car on the truck must have run over something or bottomed it out on speedbump. It seems that he may have gone on a joy ride! The case was cracked like it had been dropped on a chunk of concrete. In addition, the front spoiler was broken along with the two passenger side wheels being scratched badly. I have a claim with the carriers insurance for over $7K to repair the spoiler, replace the wheels, a broken tail light and some damage under the car. The parts are over $5.5K alone. Overall the car is in great condition. The damage is easily fixed. The motor runs great and I did put the recommended 75W/90 with LSD. I have tightened the timing belt covers which were very loose. Maybe I have a little exhaust leak. The car runs great and I don't suspect anything major. I just came in from a drive and the sound only lasts a few seconds around 4500 RPM and than goes away. I will try the Mobile synthetic. It may do the trick. In the mean time, I need to find a reliable mechanic here in Fresno. Thank you all. I really appreciate the site and everyone's willingness to give help. Owning a Ferrari is very satisfying. I have had Corvettes, Porsche's, and a 308 several years ago. Forgot how much fun it was. Sounds like it is oil lacking the Limited Slip additive as Steve mentioned. Just how was the tranny case cracked during transport, if you don't mind me asking? How was this crack repaired? |

Scott do we assume that the gear oil you used had posi additive in it. I use Mobile 1 and it works fine . Has the additive in it. Steve |

Are you sure that it is not an exhaust leak or??? Other than that, run for a few miles, then drain the oil, look for any debris in the oil or on the plug. Sometimes people chip reverse, but that would sound at slow speeds and acceleration. |

Hello fellow Ferrari owners. I am new and enjoying the experience. My 1989 328 had the gear case cracked when I got it. (It was broken in transport and was not run without oil.) I repaired the crack and replaced the oil with the recommended 75W/90. I notice a slight chatter in the transmission when I excellerate hard. It sounds a litle like a pinging but it is not the engine. The car has 32,500 miles. Is there some additive that it recommended to eleminate this. Or is there something else that I should check. Thank you for any help. |
