The charges against zmax aren't about minor misstatements. The allegations are that the tests cited to support the performance claims actually demonstrated that motor oil treated with zmax produced more than TWICE as much bearing corrosion than motor oil alone. This is not suprising considering the other allegation is that all three of their products(engine, fuel & transmission) were actually tinted mineral oil.

The FTC has taken similar action against prolong, motor-up, duralube, stp, some similar Valvoline product and slick 50. I think all admitted they made misrepresentations and most had to make refunds, I believe the largest was 10 million.

I've used Prolong only recently and I can say that my oil temperature guage does read a cooler reading with that stuff in it. I actually added Prolong because I won't be able to use the car except every two weeks when I'm back in town. I' added it in an attempt to reduce cold-start friction.

I am surprised about Zmax. I am glad I never put it in my daily driver.

There is a FTC investigation of Zmax going on now. It seems independant tests show it causes more gunk in the engine , not less as it claims.

I have used Duralube with some success, and certainly wouldn't refer to it as "snake oil" though there are certainly enough of that out there. My biggest caution on the use of additives is that they commonly use chlorene as part of the formula. I have personally seen surface corrosion caused by this. Another concern would be.... If perhaps the engine is tired, and has a buildup of "crud" inside, wouldn't Chlorene clean it so well that the filter overloads and bypasses?

"snake oil" IMHO

I have never put them into my car but I have heard good things from them. A few Ferrari owners use them. Many will use Zmax and Prolong together as they perform differently.

Has anyone had any experience with these additives, or opinions on them? Or are they just "snake oil"?
