I noticed that the QV sounds good at low rpms. Very throaty.

Frederick,

the sound on my car without cat and sport exhaust was terrible at low revs but absolut fantastic over 4000rpms.
Best way for me would be to have the original
sound in low revs and these sport sound at high revs.
I will buy an direct ignition for my car. I think
one reason for problems without cat in my car is the terrible ignition timing in us cars at low revs.

The air pump is removed. I live in Indiana so emmisions isn't a problem. It has a borla exhaust on it so the cats came off when I had that put on. I can tell a difference for sure. Better response and the sound is fantastic. The borla is much lighter then the stock exhaust also.

Richelson,
I have an 83QV with no cats and no air pump and it runs fine.

Thanks Dirk. So, can the 83' run without cats? Also, since I live in an area with no emissions testing the 83' would be fine and I could remove the smog pump.

There is the same Bosch injection unit but
the 84-85 cars have an extra frequency valve
which controls the pressure in the injection
unit. These valve makes, that the engine has
in every situation the right fuel mixture.
But these early "Lambda" control system can make
some trouble. I cant run my 84QV car without
cat. If i do this, the engine get misfire after
some miles.

It is Bosch for all, but the earlier cars have a mechanical means of metering fuel-flow (although there are some electrical components to recieve signals and send signals to the mechanical devices).

Air-pumps supply a continuous flow of ambient air into the exhaust ports of the cylinder heads (driven by a pulley on the exhaust cam shaft). Pulse injection deliver air into the same place, but it is regulated by a reed valve with a vacuum signal from the intake.

Dirk what does the 83' use? I thought it was Bosch injection too. What makes it different in 84-85?

Hi guys,

What is the difference between the pulse air system on the '84-85, and the "other" system on the '83?

The injection of the 84 and 85 cars are ECU
controlled and they have an O2 sensor.
The 84 and 85 cars have only one cat.
In the Specs Ferrati gave 235HP for the 84 and 85 cars and 230HP for the 83 cars.
From 84 on they use another primer for the body, with zinc in it, which should give a better
rust prevention.

You are just about spot on Richelson. The pulse air injection replaced the unreliable system on the 83 model. The car is virtually the same car, sans the air pumps. I'm not entirely sure if there are other differences. But I was told once to buy an 84 or an 85 if you got into the 308 QVs.
So I got an 84, and that thing is more reliable than my VW! What a wonderful car. I am REALLY looking forward to putting some miles on it tomorrow.

I have heard that there is a difference between the 83 and 84-85 QVs. Pulse air injection on the 84-85 and a belt driven smog pump on the 83. What does this do? It is just for emissions. Are there any other diffs? It looks like they are just as reliable as the 84-85 too.
