Doug -- I'd stand by my earlier opinion, that if the self-test is wacky, you really can't have any confidence in the operation of the system. I believe that the thermocouple/ECU warning light system is very independent of all other systems -- at least it is on the 2 Fs that I've had that pre and post date your 328GTS (the OM usually contains a fairly decent tech description of the system) so I think you've only got 3 options:

1. clean all connections
2. check the thermocouple(s) resistance(s) per WSM
3. replace ECU

Frank,

When you indicate to check the thermo coupler, do you mean that it may be loose, poor ground or defective? If it is defective, how does one check it? Thanks for this idea.

Check the thermal coupler that plugs into the Cat.

A while back I had requested some assistance with my idiot light (slow-down) malfunctioning. I still have not resolved the issue, but have more symtoms to report. I appreciate all who responded previously -- perhaps you can help again to resove this problem once and for all.

When I turn the ignition key on sometimes the slow down light remains on and sometimes it goes off after a few seconds ,as I believe it should. If it goes off correctly the light may then reappear after I drive the car for a while, then will go off for a while then perhaps on again. Sometimes from the time I turn the ignition key on, the light stays on while I drive the car and then will go off after the car is running for 15 minutes. Yeseterday while checking it out, the light even started blinking even though I never even started the engine.
It was suggested in prior posts that I may have a bad "relay for protection of oxygen sensor system" or the "Bosch protection relay" Does anyone have a suggestion as to which I would check first or what the problem likely is? I really do not wish to start replacing all sorts or electrical components without a better idea as to how to resolve the problem.
