Thanks for the help. The problem was with the switch. I traced the wires using the wiring diagram and disconnected the brown and black/yellow wires on the hazard switch and connected them together. Now I have turn signals again, but no hazard lights. I can live with that. Does anyone have a good source for the hazard switch??

The steering lock has no connection to the turn signals. Two seperate systems. Probably the shock is causing a connection to make or break. I agree on the hazard flasher switch, they are failure prone and the turn signal circuit passes through the switch.

At $70 per hour, it is cheaper to replace than fiddle, it normally lasts longer too. Also, being the nice guy that I am, if it were to not work after a "fix", I would eat the cost, soon go out of business then. Struggle at best anyway!

Brian, Aren't the contacts copper point contacts? When disassembled they can be adjusted rather than replaced. Curious?????

The turn signals run via the hazard switch, I replace 5 or 6 a year. The steering "wiggle" fix sounds like the connectors may be intermittent by the column? My $0.02.

Sometimes I've had the issue with the ignition interlock. If the steering wheel is cranked a little (either left or right) when you turn the car ignition off, the steering wheel interlock is engaged. If you try again to engage the key to start the car, and you need to wiggle the steering wheel a little to get the key to turn and unlock the steering wheel. When this occurs, the car will start, but for some reason the interlock still somehow shuts power off to the directionals rendering them useless (btw the hazards will work). I started going through the entire electrical system once, only to find that this is the cause. If this happens, turn the steering wheel straight, turn the car off, and wiggle the steering wheel until there is no strain on the interlock, and then the directionals will work. I don't know if this is your problem, but if you encounter intermittent signals, give it a whirl. What I usually do on startup is check the directionals. If they do not work, then I wiggle the steering wheel, shut off the ignition and try it again. Believe it or not, this works.

John...I have the same exact problem! They would begin working after I cycled the hazard swith on and off (so I new the bulbs were still good). Ended up replacing all the fuses with the correct amperage Euro fuses (from Pep Boys), made sure the fuses contacts were clean and tight, made sure the flasher contacts were clean and seated tightly, and tried it again -- and they worked fine. Someone suggested that the hazard switch might be faulty and in need of replacement (apparently, it is tied to the circuit in some way?). I'll check this evening to see if they are still working, though (haven't been able to drive it for a few weeks).

Thanks Mark. I was afraid that was the one. My book shows it as the emergency flasher. My emergency flashers work fine, but no turn signals...

Take off the dash cover (it is held on with velcroe - just gently pull down and back). Flasher will be top left relay, bigger than all the others.

Can someone please tell me where the flasher unit is located on a 1980 GTSi?
