I've had a look in the workshop manual just now. Certainly doesn't look too difficult. I do wonder just how hard it will be to unbolt the drive shafts from the axle though, and whether there will be enough clearance to get the axle out (or more probably enough clearance to get tha axle back in). Defintely a two man job though. Do post what you decide to do and how you get on.

Thank you both for the response. I have the workshop and parts manuals - and they are some help. Daren

I can scan the section in 400i workshop manual if you want me to, assuming it actually gives any relevant information (some of the sections are really poor). Let me know.

First of all Daren, Being a 400i The transmission will have to come out first. So if you have access to a lift and a trans. jack it should not be too hard. It should be possible by jacking the car up far enough off the floor to have ample room to work, but that is the hardest way, on your back. The parts I could not guess right off the top, but G.T. Car Parts will give you the best price, 623-780-2200. The best way to get a price from a shop would be to call them after you have priced the parts and decided rather or not to DIY.

Does anyone have an idea for how much this should cost - parts included? And is it something that a regular guy could do himself?
