Many Thanks to everybody for your replies,it seems on balance that I will stick with the michelins,as Barry said he is pleased with the new ones he has just fitted. I know another tyre may be slightly better in terms of performance but somehow no other tyre seems to look right. So it looks like my hard earned cash is going to Michelin (Herr Schumacher would not be amused), I only hope I dont regret it. Many Thanks again Gareth

The problem with P4000's is that the max width for the 14" wheel is 205. My car has 215's in back, and I like the small added safety margin of bigger tires in the rear of a tail heavy car. Are there other possibilities beside XWX for 14" wheels? I've thoroughly exhausted TireRack.com Hans. |

I am in the process of having my 308 wheels completely stripped and refinished and I am installing Pirelli P 4000 tires on them. When this is over, I will post. The guy refinishing the wheels said he found rust under the paint he had stripped... but he does them right. I am hoping for a brand new look when they are finished |

Barry, I got the money for you in the mail. Oh you got a beautiful car. Also, from what I have beeen told by tire people the speed rating on tires are a rating of 2 hours at max temp, load and speed. So, 150mph for an H rated tire is not that bad. In other words it should not blow up. But sometihng like a T or S tire is more of a passenger tire and not meant for the high speed in any time period. H and above are meant for speed. My 2 cents. |

Gareth, I agree with Kelly. The Pirelli P4000 SuperTouring tires are an excellent choice. Although HR-rated in the United States, you can obtain the European P4000s which are VR-rated and have a bit more vintage look to them as far as sidewall appearance. Check to see if your wheels are the special-order wide star wheels which was an option at the time. My car has those wheels which are 14 X 7 1/2. The Michelin 205/70VR14 XWXs have a special beading which permit mounting on those size wheels. It appears that you have an eye for esthetics. The XWXs certainly have that 70s look. I was in a similar situation in that my 308 GTB had 16 year-old XWXs on it when I purchased the car. The new XWXs were a big improvement. Not as good as modern low-profile tires as far as handling, but certainly appropriate for the capabilities of the 308. Barry

I just order the perrelli P4000. Thye are $58.00 at Victoriatire.com. I could not justify the expense of the old or new Michelin. Plus the president of Perrelli is alwasy at our concours |

Gareth, I recently put new XWXs on my 1976 308 GTB. I'm very pleased with them. The car's suspension was tuned for the XWXs as they were original equipment. If the Michelins on your car now are old, I'm sure you'll find the new XWXs quite an improvement. Barry |

You might try Coker Tire. They sell vintage tires, and have a Michelin Vintage Racing Division that produces older patterns w/ modern compounds. Pretty pricey, but surely safer than 20 yea old tires. They're on the web at www.coker.com I have heard that Avon make a similar modern tire to the XWX in sidewall look, but w/ a more modern tread design Best of luck. Steve |

Hi, can anybody help. I am just about to buy a new pair of tyres for my GT4 but not sure which brand to go for, firstly I havent found a tyre that looks right on the car like the Michelin does (fulda and pirelli look too modern)but the Michelins that are on the car now have almost zero grip. I dont know if this is because they are so old and have age hardened or if I buy brand new XWX's they will also be like this. I would rather stick to the Michelins for the sake of looks but I would like to hear of anybody else's experience of these tyres when they are new. Many Thanks in advance, Gareth
