If you cannot determine the sweet smell of the exhaust, you can check the oil. If it has a white creamy sort of look to it, then you have coolant in there, and a blown gasket.

If you smell the sweet burning scent of coolant, then you are done for. Pulling the engine and replacing the head gasket is most certainly an expensive proposition on any car, let alone a Ferrari. It would be very bad karma to just replace the head gasket and put it back. So "while you are there" you might as well do all the seals, get a decent valve job, may be do a clutch. For a 308, that is already an expensive job. For a 355, that is most certainly a very expensive job, $5K if you do it yourself. |

100C is not that hot, IMHO. Does the cloud dissipate (coolant/water) or hang in the air (oil)? Unfortunately, either way, it looks very much like an engine out repair ($5K and up). If it's oil, rule out any vapor control or PVC issues before proceeding. |

The smoke has a weird smell to it, yes. The car has not overheated, but it has run hot - 100 degrees C on the water, a few times lately. The car runs great, by the way! Im putting the car on a transporter to ferrari in gothenburg next week. This is not the kind of experience I expected from a 80k car. "Today my ferrari worked great, not" Peter

I think removing heads on any ferrari is a pretty expensive proposition. |

I think you will have to remove the engine. Did the car overheat? Any extra info would be helpful. If the car did overheat then it is a very good possibility. Does the smoke have a sweet smell to it? Is it pretty cloudy? If so then it probably is. The head will need to be removed from the block and then resurfaced. You can do a compression test to see or you can just pull a plug on the suspect cylinder and see if coolant is in there. I wouldn't run the car with coolant in the cylinder as the extra pressure can bend a rod. I imagine if will be rather expensive. HTHs. |

Hello All! My F355 has suddenly started to produce a lot of white smoke from the exhaust, even when the car is warmed up. Talked to some mechanics (not ferrari mechanics), and they told me it was probably a head gasket leaking coolant into one or more of the cylinders. Replacing the head gasket, is that expensive? Do you have to take the engine out? Peter |
