Hans, Mine is leaking on that side also. I recently was looking at ways to quiet my noisy gearbox and was refered by a drag race friend to a product called Lucas oil stabilizer. It seems that is it a good reputation amongst drag racers. They make a product that they say will stop steering rack leaks. I was pretty impressed with the stuff, you might want to check it out. www.lucasoil.com Rob |

Steve: Are any other parts needed besides the boots? How do you refill the oil - i.e. how do you get access to where the oil goes in? Thanks, Hans. |

Hans I had the same problem a year ago. I boot split and was leaking the oil out. The process is simple. Remove the ite rod ends (measure the distance from the threadless part of the steering arm to the nut that locks the tie rod end). Unscrew the shaft and leave the tie rod in place. Replace the boot and center and tighten. Attach the steering shaft. Do the same for the other side and you are done. If you want go have the toe in reset. Took me about 1 hour. |

I did search the archives under 'leaky' steering gear. I don't think a rebuild is in order for just a leaky boot. Hans. |

Hans, Go to the archives and search. Look under steering rack and you should find posts on the R&R of the rack. Most guys have sent them out to be rebuilt or on a exchange basis. That seems too be a better way to go. |

I had posted this earlier, but it might have gotten mixed up in the server meltdown: I am leaking fluid from the left boot of the steering gear on my '75 308GT4. Before I tear into it, I'd like to know what I am getting into. Is it likely that the boot needs replaced, or is there some way to tighten it? If it needs replaced, how do you get it off? I am assuming that the tie rod will need to be disconnected - if so, what about toe-in alignment? Any parts needed beside the boot? Thanks, Hans. |
