Don, Although I have not removed my oil pan on my 81 308 I have removed other pans and the like where gasket removal was required. Removal without damage is especially tricky with Alum. I have used a paint and gasket remover to soften and lift the gaskets in the past. Mine was a spray on product that I got from a friend so I can't tell you where to get it but it really worked well and was not messy. |

Once again, Thanx all for the marvelous advice and help. I got the oil pan and tranny pan back on and managed to get all those ball bearings back in and set properly using the grease trick. After spending several hours cleaning off the old gaskets on both surfaces I was wondering if there is a better way to get good sealing surfaces without all of the scraping and green pad rubbing to get them clean. It's done now but I did it the old fashioned way, elbow grease. It's a good thing I don't make my living this way as I take much too long. Any way thanx again Don |

Don, just use grease to retain the springs and balls during reassembly of the trans pan. that way, you wont pull your hair out chasing little ball bearings across the garage floor. |

Steve, Thanx for the help. I finally figured out the thermistor and got the oil pan off. I will try the info in TAV 28. Why did I not look there? Guess I can't read Italian. Thanx again. Don |

Don -- The balls, springs, centering cups, and spacer are shown in the SPC on the page with the shifter forks (try TAV 28). Works like a stair step arrangement -- (if the illustration in my SPC is correct) the rearmost hole has a counterbore in the pan to lower the cup; in the middle hole the cup sits at the same level as the pan mounting flange, and the front position uses the spacer to elevate the cup. Bottom line is that you want each ball/spring to have the same relationship with its corresponding sliding shaft with the detents so just look where the sliding shafts are and you should be able to deduce what goes where. On the engine pan removal -- did you also remove the thermistor? (might be item 34 on TAV 19 if the '79 SPC is not too different from the '78 SPC) |

Hi I have a 79 308 and I am trying to change the gaskets for the engine oil pan and the transmission oil pan. I got the transmission oil pan off but in doing so 3 small springs and 3 ball bearings and 1 small cylinder fell off into my hands. They are held in place by the flange of the oil pan so I am pretty sure nothing is wrong with the tranny (car drove fine before I took it apart) I just need to know how they go back in as the parts manual and the so-called workshop manual are silent and say nothing of these parts. Second, In dropping the oil pan I got the cover loose and then had to remove the dipstick tube and a small internal tube to get the pan to come down. Now the pan is hanging down about 4 inches below the bottom of the engine crankcase stuck apparently on the oil baffles against parts of the crankcase or crankshaft that I can't see. Is there something else to remove here to get the oil pan to come all the way out of the car? Thanks for any help as I really can't put the tranny cover back without knowing the proper order of things. I suppose I could always just put the engine cover back on but I was hoping to get it off and clean it thoroughly. Incidentally, I tried the search function before asking the group but got too many responses mostly about oil consumption. |
