I use the Shell synthetic stuff that Ferrari is selling now in the 355 and 360 (Spirax 75/90 synthetic). I get it for cheap (less than Amzoil or Redline). It's my way of supporting the F1 efforts...

This is my post from an earlier discussion ---I have read that Red Line page and I this is my conclusion and summary. It seems that 75W90 Gear oil contain Limited-Slip Differential Friction-Modifier which reduce the stick/slip vibrations and noises in the LSD. Normally this modifier will reduce the load-carrying capability of the lubricant. Red Line claims that their 75W90 Gear oil does not do that. I suppose that they have added their own Shockproof Gear Oil which basically is some kind of EP(extreme pressure)-additive. The 75W90NS does not contain Limited-Slip Differential Friction-Modifier additive that might lead to some LSD grinding noises. The solution is to add this additive into the 75W90NS until those sounds cease, about 4%. On the other hand, this friction modifier will reduce the function of the synchronizers in that way that shifting will take longer time. 75W90NS can be used if you want better lock up of the LSD and faster shifting. Unfortunately friction losses will increase and rear wheel power will be reduced (in theory). Except chatter noises from the LSD I dont know if there are any other drawbacks. I suppose that if you have severe problem with shifting you should try the 75W90NS and add Limited-Slip Differential Friction-Modifier until the chatter noises stops. More slippery oil will increase shifting time, decrease friction losses and therefore improve rear wheel power. Since I dont have any severe problem with shifting (although it sometimes take a little longer time than I prefer), I can hear some grinding noises when full steering and I need all hp I can get in my 328 I think that I will try Red Line 75W90 Gear oil. API GL-4, -5 and 6 indicate compatibility with different materials in the gearbox from a corrosion point of view. Ferrari recommends API GL-5 according to my sticker in the engine compartment. This is my conclusion and summary. Dont hesitate to correct me if I am wrong. --- Since then I have used Red Line 75W90NS (not the Gear oil) for 3000 miles and I can report that the shifting is much smoother and faster now but it took a month before it worked with full effect. I can't tell if the lock-up of the LSD is much better now but I can say that it isn't worse and works very good now. Ciao Peter |

I think you HAVE to use the MT90 Redline rather than the regular 75w synthetic oil because of the brass synchros. The MT90 is compatable with brass synchros whereas the regular oil pits them and shortens their lifespan. |

I've been a Mobil 1 user for years and I think it is great. However, I believe I will switch to Redline after a conversation with the manager of the Ferrari of Washington Challenge team. I think both are good but I'm going with Redline from now on. |

Mine has Mobile 1 synthetic right now, but I'll probably try the Redline 75w90 full synthetic in about 2 months when I change the gear case fluids. |

I have used redline MT-90 with great results. I have not yet put it in a Ferrari but in a Lotus and it felt like the car has a brand new and different tranny. Shifts were not only smoother but quicker. If you do decide to use this product make sure it's the MT-90 and not regular gear oil. |

The oil for your diff is also in your trans. Use synthetic limited slip lube. It doesnt have a seperate section for the diff. |
