Terry,

I emailed you a couple of photos showing a simple support for the front heat shield. The photos were too big to post here.

Do like Ed says. Use the exhaust manifold heat shield wrap and pack it under the shield. He mentioned this in a recent post.

Terry,
I'll have to get back to you on this with a picture or two. Basically, I fabricated a cantelever spring, actually a strip of stainless steel and a hose clamp, to hold it up. One end is secured to the heat shield with a hose clamp and the other end is fastened to the front driver's side motor mount bolt. It seems to hold it up pretty well but it's not very elegant. I'll probably revisit this method again during the winter.

Back in April the F dealer did a 30k on my 308 and he did bill me for shims for engine mounts!!!
Dont know if it would help you or not just an observation.

The heat shield on the front bank has definitely fallen down. It is very loose and rests gently on the shift rod.

the mounts replacement job is done, and the car shifts fine. I dont think the lightweight heat shield is really interfering with anything, but it would be nice if it was not rubbing.

How do you get it to stay up? When under the car, I can push it up and it slides up very easily, but when I let go it droops again. How do you make it stay? I cant see any obvious fasteners?

Terry,

It could be that the front header heat shield loosened up and dropped down. This is what happened on my 78 308. When the heat shield is lifted back into place, I have clearance.

Just my .02, and not much more than that.

In the bundle of service records that came with my car ('75 308GT4), there is a repair order mentioning something about a shift problem (I don't have it in front of me, so I can't be precise). The shop shimmed the mounts. Shifts fine currently, so I can't compare to what it was like before being shimmed.

I got the new mounts in and will be finishing up the install today. Only thing left to do is line the engine up and bolt the mounts to the frame. I need some tapered pins to assist in this so a trip to the tool store...

My questions relates to the old mounts and problems the car was having. After cleaning them up, the old mounts appear to be fine. The springs inside still compress in a bench vise and the mounts are not all rusty or horrid looking. Im wondering if I wasted $650 in parts.

The engine was definitely sitting too low as the shift rod being pushed into the exhaust heat shield and there was some other obvious rubbing going on. However, it would appear that instead of replacing the mounts, perhaps simply putting some shims under the mounts would have raised it sufficiently. There are already shims there and adding a couple more to raise it 1/4 inch or so would be no big deal.

Has anyone else done the shims thing? If the old mounts did not have pretty good spring tension, I would not even consider this but they appear to be pretty stiff still.

One thing for sure, getting them to line up and bold down is going to be a real pain.
