Well I found a local shop that does only starterters and alternators. Turned out it was the stator. Bad news since they told me it would be better off to try to find a rebuilt one vs them trying to find a new core. Anyhow, I called T Rutlands. Ted had a couple of cores and is having one rebuilt for me. Thanks for everyones help.

TRutlands is a reliable source, but a local BOSCH rebuilder will probably be cheaper.

You might try asking a local Mercedes or BMW dealer or Foreign Car Repair shop for the name of a reliable local BOSCH rebuilder.

Thanks for the help guys. The alternator will still not charge. When I start the car the charge light goes on then after about 5 to 10 seconds the ammeter goes almost all the way to the right (charging). This lasts about 30 or 60 seconds then the ammeter falls to the middle (not charging). When I turn the car off and try to start it again no charge light.

Has to be the alternator or voltage regulator.

I pulled it this afternoon. Not as tough as I thought. It is a Bosch 65A. Guess I need to have it rebuilt. Probably do it and the voltage regulator. Appears to be all one unit that houses the regulator and brushes.

Anyone got any recommendations on where to send it. I live in a small town in Alabama and don't really trust any of the local guys.

Thanks for all your help.

Have the alternator rebuilt, it's a Bosch unit, no big deal. On later BB there are two of them! The red bulb grounds through the alternator circuit, when the engine runs the current energises the system, as it charges, the alternator produces a +ve at the bulb circuit instead of ground, therefore the light extinguishes. If the bulb is no good, the system does not supply the necessary "exciter" signal.

The charge light has to be working for the alternator to work. It is this voltage from the light that exites the voltage regulator. Take the bulb out and the alternator will not work.

Need a little advice. This is for a 79 512BB but I think the same applies for the electrical systems of 308's or TR's.

I noticed the other week while driving the car my ammeter was not showing the battery being charged. However, the charge light was not lighting up. Would only show a current draw when the accessories (say headlights) were used. I pulled the gauge and it works fine. With a voltmeter I show 12.5V with car not running and a little lower with the car running. OK, so I am thinking alternator or voltage regulator.

Now here is the strange part or at least the part I don't understand. Normally when you start the car the small red charge light goes on. Sometimes when I start the car the light will come on and the ammeter will function normally; ie show a charge when running; red charge light goes out; around 15 volts at the battery. However other times when I started the car the the red charge light will not come on in ignition position and then with the car running the ammeter showns no charge and I read lower than 12.5 volts at the battery.

Over the weekend I traced the circuit for the charge light and cleaned all the connectors, etc. So far so good. The light goes on in the ignition position, with car running the ammeter shows the battery is charging, charge light goes out.

Does anyone know if this circuit has to be functioning for the alternator to charge. If so maybe just a short in the wiring and everything is OK. Or, maybe it is a diode in the alternator causing an intermittent problem and the next time I start the car I will have th same problem.

Sorry for the long post but would appreciate any help.

Drew
