Justin, Thanks, this is probably what I will do as the sending unit is intact with no damage and all of the wiring is correct.
Thanks
Robert

I went through this ordeal very recently with my 328. My tach worked fine, then one day was dead. My mechanic and I checked all wiring/leads and everything seemed to be fine. Sent the tach to Palo Alto for a rebuild. A week later had it back, no problems. Works like a dream now. PA chraged $140, so if you can remove/reinstall yourself it is definitely reasonable.

just wanted to chime in that when I first test drove my TR the tach was off as well. It ended up being replaced as part of the purchse. It's a really pricey $6-800 part, that MAY be able to be repaired, altho I've never used this place, I have heard great things about them, http://www.paspeedo.com/

I will say that out of this I have a great looking paperweight, looks JUST like a real Veglia TR tach...and it could be yours for the right price, LOL....

Sorry, scratch that comment off. Just checked that on my wiring diagram and there is only one lead from the tach to one of the coils on my GT4.

Most tachs get their signals from the distributor. With these cars having twin distributors, could it be that one is only sending the signal and the reason why the revs would be reading half of what they really should be? I'll be taking a closer look at my wiring diagram now.

Last week I drove a 328 with 31K miles on it and the tach was definitely slow. I didn't ask about it because I wasn't going to buy that car, but I was curious and made a mental note to check this on any other 328s I drive.

All Ferrari speedos (well I'm assuming all, but I'm sure there are some out there that have been corrected, even the new ones seem to have this as a recurring theme) read about 10mph high. And the tachs usually run about 500 high. But neither of these would explain your problem, just a little ferrari-ism I thought I would share.

This must be a common problem with the 328 as I drove one the other day with 15,000 miles on it and the tach was definately slow but the owner did not seem to be concearned about it when I mentioned it so I did not get a chance to diagnose the problem. Please let me know what they find as I may own this car some day.

My 328 has 21K on it and I had the Ferrari dealer do a 30K inspection on it last month. Previous to that, the tach worked fine and was reading correctly. When they finished, it was showing 2/3 the RPM's that it should have. I took the connections apart (left side engine) and cleaned and scraped and re-assembled. At 80 MPH the tach is showing 2800. The dealer had no idea what happened and will put another tach head in the car but that was not moved during the inspection so I am hesitant to have them do that.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the cause might be or how to remedy the problem ?
