After the drive to and from Montral for the GP, my alternator packed it in. After some problem isolation, it turned out the brushes were no longer making good contact. In the process, I found some useful sites: http://www.buchanan1.net/charge.shtml http://www.kae-automotive.de/Motorelektronik.htm http://www.usi.com.tw/capabilites_products/usi_b1_3a_4.htm http://www.fd-japan.com/en-apri1300.htm In addition, a cross to amongst others a 1978 VW Scirocco and a Canadian Tire Part #19-5311-8 for only $31.69CD. The new unit looks quite different, much smaller. However, it fits, it works and it has a trim pot to adjust the voltage. Not that you can reach that on a 308 but it is there if I want to tweak it the next time the alternator needs to come out. Default voltage on mine is 13.65.

A generator is DC and alternator is AC. |

The change in pitch of the fuel pump is probably a voltage drop, but it is more likely a wire gauge or connection (think fuse panel) issue than alternator. You can varify that by measuring the voltage directly at the alternator with various things turned on and off. It really shouldn't change, if it does then you may have an issue with the alterantor. |

Richelson I had my 77 308 alt. rebuilt 2 years ago and had it pumped up to 85 AMPS. which I was told was max for that type Bosch alt. Cost $100 and works great.I park the car on my lift during the winter and take it out on good days to blow it our. Never had a battery problem yet. |

Yes true but doesn't a generator use DC vs. AC? |

They just use the term Generator since It is a commonly used and recognized word. It makes much more sense than the "Battery" light that is used on most cars now. Every time the Battery light comes on people go out and buy a battery thinking that will fix the problem. |

Hi Ferrarilist, 3/11/2001, David Thursby wrote that a later model Volvo or MB Bosch 100+ Amp alternator internals can be fitted to the housing. You have to make sure the laminated plates are same thickness, otherwise you need to adjust the thickness of the mountings accordingly. Just do a search with the above criteria on FL for Jan/2001-April/2001. You should pull up a few postings from Dave around that time. |

I noticed that the later model 308s have higher amp alternators. On my 1978 308 would it be possible to have mine rebuild to the specs on the later model QVs? I am not having any troubles with mine existing unit but I do notice that when I use the brakes, use turn signals, etc. that I can hear the fuel pump change pitch. I assume this is because the brake lights are using power too and that going to a higher rate alternator would help in these cases. Why does it have a "G" for the alt. warning light. If it means generator then I am not sure why that was used as I thought that the 308s all used alternators (alternating current) not generators. |
