Things to look at: - definitely have a mechanic experienced in F cars look at it - take for a long drive which allows enough time for the engine and 'box to warm up. At cold start you move thru 1st to 3rd gear. When warmed you should be able to move into 2nd without any baulking. It should be clean and smooth - if not could be a synchro problem - a FSH with services done at scheduled intervals is good to have as is access to previous owner/s - replace the air con (in Austria !) with a York compressor - its about 3 times the power and will freeze your ..... off - check that the heater works and the blower fans are there, hard to find a replacement - check the electric windows work (albeit slowly) - make sure the doors fit snugly, apparently a pain to correct otherwise - if it's coming up to a major service haggle with the price. Suggest you also budget for a carb rebuild if it hasn't been done since 1978 - amazing difference - check shocks condition - check disc brakes thickness/wear - the clutch usually needs replacing but is easy to do and relatively inexpensive - I prefer the original wheels for the 308 this being 6.5 x 14" or option of 7.5 x 14". The handling etc is better. Have 16" but these are good for track days. General road use I prefer the 14". - replace the water pump with a 328 pump. The 308 pump is crap and breaks down. The 328 version is excellent. - check for white vs blue smoke. There's a few threads on this in Fchat. - Check vin numbers - check all guages work - don't bother with a expensive stereo setup - the engine will provide what you need to listen to ! This sounds like the 308 has a lot of problems - they don't. Just a compilation of personal and other owners experience. They are a great car - enjoy.

I am trying to scan and post the 3 page receipt to give people an ideal of what a car that sits for 10 years can need. While I dont agree with what the previous owner was charged. He did need the work. |

Wow. I'm in the finishing stages of a high-comp, EFI, DFI, ~270HP 308 motor, and I think we'll have less than $13K in the whole project... including the cost of the donor motor. Ouch! |

I am convinced that Ferrari has received a great deal of bad press re "expensive maintenance/repair" due to the practices of unscrupulous mechanics and shops like the one mentioned below. $13K for service? Please. And what's amazing is the number of people willing to be duped out of this kind of cash. You'd think the mechanic was working on the space shuttle, not a basic gasoline engine. My theory is that many Ferrari owners have more money than they have good sense, and they can afford to be carele$$. I'm always amused at the ebay adds for a $30K Ferrari that say things like "$19,000 in recent repairs - have receipts." About 90 percent of this stuff is OVERKILL. Yanking the engine out of the car for maintenance is mindless, not to mention highway robbery. But, like they say, it's only money. |

No tranny problem. They refused to set up the carbs and distributors unless they removed the engine to re-drill the broken co tubes on the exhaust manifolds and install new ones.Almost every 308 I see the tubes are either missing.snapped off or rotted. The car does run great though. I guess so for 13k. |

Why did the engine need to come out? The beauty of 308/328 cars is that they do not normally need the engine removed to do service....you can do belts, valve adjustment, clutch replacement, etc. without yanking the whole power train....maybe a tranny problem also???? |

first thing let a authorized dealer or some specializes in ferrari do a engine compression check. the engine should be warm and driven a while prior to the test, and if the #S are low {low psi} then the engine is going to give you problems,id would walk away ru=ight there on the spot..thats would be my first thing to do in a p.p.i, hope it helps,, bruce |

I know it was to much. That is what Ferrari of Raleigh N.C. charged. The total bill came in at 13,000.00 With all the extras. I have a copy of the 3 page receipt.Car came out of 10 year storage and went to dealer. I didnt pay the 13k I bought it from the guy who did . Needless to say he wanted to cry.But that is the everyday price there for and engine out 30k. Includes bearings, rebuild water pump etc. |

$8K for a 30K mile service on a 308 is too much. You are being robbed. The service should run no more than $3,500.00 plus any additional items you have corrected at that time. |

Plus after a Ferrari mechanic goes through the car the price usually can be negotiated down. The dealer in my area is now getting $8000.00 usd for full 30 k maintenance. This includes engine out and redrill exhaust probes. |
