Verell,
I have an 84 Euro and it had a mixture of black and red extenders when I got it so I replace all of them. I dont remember which was which now, but one had a built in resistor and the other didnt. I was told the 308's didnt run the extenders with the resistors and the 328's did. Unfortunately my car is in the body shop so I cant go and see which ones I installed. I did post the info and you may be able to look it up in the archive or I can find out when I pick up my car next week.

Well, my car is suffering from some poor running issues. It hesitates under full throttle from low revs, has a very intermitant misfire usually at low to mid revs and makes tons of popping and burbling on the overrun. I believe the carbs may be to blame for some of it, but I suspect is more to do with ignition and timing.

Anyhow, this conversion coupled with the MSD is something I am really interested in. However, its pointless (no pun intended) if no more of the custom distributors are available or if the cost is out of my range.

Anyhow... Ben if you have more or are going to make more, we need to talk.

Jerry, Im glad you have enjoyed the Distributor I made for you. If you think that Dist was great add a MSD6AL. That was one of the reasons I made this distributor. If you dont know, your car only sparks one time for each power stroke, MSD makes my distributor spark up to 8 times each stroke, not to mention MSD will add an additional 10,000 or 15,000 volts to your coil.

TERRY: As far as his coil, its an aftermarket. Its pointless to use your old coils on these, they dont have enough voltage.Although if you choose to they will work. However for about 80$ you can buy a top of the line 45,000volt coil. I got shocked the other day playing around with my ignition. I can say now from personal experience MSD does spark about 8 times on each stoke. I thought it was gonna tear my arm off.

SPARKPLUGS, Any type of plug will work with this system. Keep in mind you need to run a bigger gap now. What ever you used to have it set at, you can now add about .005 to it. And if you run MSD you need to gap around .045 For those of you running higher compression like 10:1 you will want to use a colder sparkplug, moving to the next colder plug.

Any idea how I can get in touch with Ben? Do you know if he is still making any of these conversions? Are you still using the stock coils?

Thanks!

RECOMMENDED PLUGS FOR EUR0 308 QV W/RED EXTENDERS???

My car came w/Champion RN9YC resistor plugs.
However, I also have the red extenders 'con resistore' which I translate as 'with resistor'.I was once told that all the Euro 308 QVs had the resistor plugs. Anyway, I've had 3 extenders fail due to arc-thru. I had a heck of a time finding replacement red extenders, so I cleaned the carbon traces out & sealed the holes with aquarium grade RTV (doesn't leave an acid deposit). This got me thru last year. I now have 8 new red extenders.

My 1st question is:
If the extender has a resistor, shouldn't I be running non-resistor plugs? Otherwise the voltage will be divided between the plug & the extender. Possibly accounting for the carbon tracking. Also I think that the double resistors would reduce the spark energy.

My owner's manual recommends non-resistor plugs:
Champion N7GY
Bosch W6DS

Most of my driving is a ~10 mile daily commute on back roads. I seldom get out on the highway to wind it out(sigh).

My plug electrode ceramic insulator tips are a dark reddisn-brown color I've never encountered before. They aren't fouled, just have a dark coating. The ground electrode is dark black. My suspicion is that I'm running too cold a plug, but I haven't noticed any miss-firing problems. Also, my AM radio has severe interference w/the engine running.

Any suggestions as to plug selection?

1) What should the electrical resistance of TR spark plug wire be per millimeter, or foot, or whatever?
2) Can one dismantle the existing spark plug cap - that is, remove it from the wire without destroying the cup and spark plug cap? How is the wire attached to the plug cap?
3) Can one simply loosen the screw for each wire in the distributor cap and pull the wire out, replacing it with a new wire?
4) Are the wires carbon centered conductors?
5) Where can I find bulk spark plug wire for a TR (1986).

Your help is greatly appreciated.

BTW my car frickin flies. I would let any F.C.er take it for a ride if you come to West Mi. I'm telling you the only mods I have done are a TUBI, a K&N filter and this ignition and this thing is so responsive it is unreal...not to mention the sound. I just had it to 130 with more to spare and it was smooth as silk. I love this car!!!!! I will find a way to post photos on Friday. Jerry.

Is Ben still making any of these conversions? I may be interested in converting my '77 GTB. Are you using it with the stock coils? I would love to see a pic of the install.

Success!!! I had bogus info. on the numbering of the front 4 cylinders. I thought 5-6-7-8 were 8-7-6-5. Consequently I was running on only 4 cylinders. I'll tell you what, right now I'd like to give Ben a big friggin' kiss! This ignition system is awesome. It should be at the top of everyone's to do list that currently does not have it. It starts easier, it accellerates faster, it idles better, it does not gurgle and pop on deceleration like it used to, and it looks great! I will post pics when I get a chance.
Bruno: I mounted it on the front position. The rear (old) dist. is just mounted and turning, but serving no function. I pulled the four wires out of the boot of course. With the carbed 308's Ben has to mount his to the existing dist body because unlike the injected dist's, he cannot manufacture a new shaft for these because of the tapered shaft. That is the reason that I put it on the front position because otherwise it would have hit the hose going to the oil cooler. Jerry.

I had the Crane XR700 electronic ignition with NGK BPR6EVX at a plug gap of .034, and this worked great on a 78 308 GTS. My mechanic mistakenly gapped the plugs at .025 and I had a definite miss, and popping at higher rpms. Went away when gapped to .034

Jerry, I use the NGK BP7EVX plugs in mine and I'm fine. I do a lot of around-town driving and she runs smooth.

It is Ben Millermon's set-up. You can view the details of how his system works if you do a search of "my own 308 distributor". It still utilizes one dist.

Sounds like the advance is not working right. More details would help. Does the electronic system use points, or hall effect pickups? Is it distributorless or just a coil replacement?

What does the electronic ignition do to plug requirements (if anything)? Jerry.

Jerry -- do a search on:

NGK spark plugs ("and" and "whole" words mode)

and you should get a lot of previous discussion to review. My opinions:

1. type: NGK BPR7EVX (stock heat range). If you do a lot of short stop-and-go trips and don't often get to run long trips at triple digit speeds, maybe step up one heat range to BPR6EVX.

2. gap: .024"~.027" would be stock-like, but others have reported good results at ~.030".

Thanks Greg. The car starts and idles better than it's ever done, but I've got some small popping when I give it gas, it is very sluggish and every once in a while it lets out a backfire louder than an M-80....THAT'S not embarrassing or anything. Jerry.

I used the NGK plugs for my '84 QV and was instructed to not regap them. I can get the NGK part number for you when I get home.

I just converted my '79 308 to an electronic ignition and was curious if anyone out ther knows what plugs/gap I should be going with. Thanks, Jerry.
