Magoo, I have a manual and a shop manual for a 308GT4, but I just wanted to make sure I was getting the correct plug. I feel very confident on a lot of older American 8-cylinders, but I'm still learning, sometimes more than I want, about my 308. I am trying to learn as much as possible so that when the time comes, I think I might try to do a major service on the car. I'm just not real knowledgeable about the transaxle on these cars. Thanks for the info.

Charlie, On filling and draining the unit your owners manual gives a good description on how to service the differential. Just checking maybe you have a manual.

It is the same fluid...usually the 75W90 synthetic stuff from Mobile 1 or Redline.

Thanks guys, I just want to check it and make sure it's not low. Is this oil for both the tranny and the rear end, or is it seperate?

If the plug you found is about in the middle of the rear side of the gearbox-differential that is the fill and level. If your car still has the aluminum half-round heat shield installed between the engine and muffler remove it so you can reach across the beam to remove the plug and fill the sump.

The level is supposed to be up to the fill hole on the back side of the engine as you describe. Sounds like you've got the right one. Easiest way to fill is through the fill hole on top of the left side transfer gear case.

The fill hole is kind of in front of the parking brake pivot, just ahead of the frame member, on the rear of the transaxle assembly. It faces the rear of the car. It just below and to the left of the differential bulge. If memory servres, its a 10mm hex key plug.

I am trying to check the level of oil in the transmission on my 77 308, but the only place I can find that remotely resembles a fill hole is sort of above and behind the right axle. Can anyone give me a good description of where the fill hole is and how to get to it? Thanks.
