I'm still having a problem. I tried the prying method with no luck. It really looks as if the bearing is the only thing keeping the bell housing on. I've got the bell housing away from the block at least 1/16th of an inch all the way around. I'm on th verge of trying heat to se if I can get the inner race of the bearing to release from the input shaft. It all sounded so easy at "expensivecar.com"

Thanks to all. I'll try the wood prying method today or tomorrow. The bearing I'm talking about is the one behind the lowest gear and is on the tranny input shaft. I hope that I'm correct that the bearing will stay with the bell housing when it comes off. Thanks again and I'll let you know when I get it off.

two things that helped me on an '80 308. to get the bell housing broken free:
  • I backed off the nuts and bolts most of the way and just pushed the clutch pedal. keeping the nuts/bolts on stops the pivot arm (or whatever it's really called) from jamming into the frame rail as the bell housing moves away from the engine.
  • remove the nuts/bolts, disconnect the clutch cable, and use a short piece of wood the pry out the bottom of the bell housing. the wood pivots on the frame tube, one end goes under/behind the bottom if the bell housing, and the other end is hanging down to the floor so you can push it with your foot while pulling on the upper pieces of the bell housing with your hands

turned out for me the biggest problem was just breaking free the silicon used around the gear oil passages below the transmission input shaft.

if there's a way to get the o-ring around the tranmission shaft to not squeeze out during reassembly, I never figure it out.

Did not have any problem with the bearings. Which bearing are you talking about? I remember the ones on the input shaft of the tranny came out very easy for me because it came out in several pieces.

Thanks for the suggestions. The snap ring was a pain but I purchased snap ring pliers the other day and it came out with no problem. I've checked that I have all the nuts and bolts out several times. It looks as if the bearing, which is tight on the shaft(inner race) and tight in the bell housing(outer race) is my problem. I just can't get the bearing to break loose. Still looking for suggestions.

If it is the snap ring, then you really should get a special snap ring tool (<$20) and it will make the job a whole lot easier to do, 15 minutes instead of 4 hours.

The snap ring plier will hold the ring apart long enough for you to shove a pick in and pry it out. You will destroy it in the process so get a new one.

More than likely the snap-ring on the input shaft that's holding you back. And its a b---- to remove.

Most parts stores have a universal tool that works quite well. You can also Eyeball the thing if your depth perception is good.

Does anyone sell a clutch alignment tool for a 308? If not how do you align the clutch properly? Thanks.
