Thanks Magoo: I am learning a great deal. Won't attempt to be my own mechanic though! Just may end up putting oil in the radiator.

The belts would be the first place I'd look, followed by the water pump. Just a note to "Jscott" there are no lifters in a 328...it's an overhead cam engine. If it's a squeal I'd say belts...mine does that if sitting for a few days and it's damp.

Mark...from you're description of the noise, the situation appears very similar to mine. The rattle sounded metallic, like lead balls rattling around in a lead metal housing. It was most noticable upon startup, but slowly diminished as the engine began to warm (usually only lasting about a minute). I recently had the 308 serviced (30k service), and the mechanic informed me that the cause of this (in my case) was a water pump going south, which they rebuilt for me. Now I have no strange noises whatsoever. So Ric Rainbolt's suggestions might be worth investigating if indeed this description fits your scenario. Hope this helps...

Mark: I am also not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination. I have a 89 328 and when it sits for a few days and I start it up, there is a slight tapping that I attribute to the lifters. I think that mayby the oil has drained a little from sitting and needs to be circulated. The noise goes away in a short time. Once warm up is completed, the noise is always gone. Does your noise change with the RPM of the engine? Just a thought, maybe someone else has another theory.

A common problem plauging 308/328's is a ticking water pump belt. I know it sounds strange, but when it happens, it REALLY does sound metallic in origin (like a ball peen hammer tapping on the engine). It also tends to sound like it's coming from the center of the engine.

A quick way to check is to start the engine cold. When you hear the ticking, shoot the water pump belt and/or pulley with WD-40 for 2-3 seconds. If the noise goes away, there's your problem. Yes, the WD-40 is probably not good for the belt, but it is a quick cheap way to diagnose the problem. Somebody else may have a better suggestion for a lubricant.

The A/C belt can do the same thing, but I've not seen that as frequently.

Metal thing is your intake air distributor. I'm confused about the noise. Is it a clinking noise or a roaring noise? Does the noise change in frequency with engine speed changes.

The noise is not normal. I have a 1987 328GTS.

I an NOT a mechanic by any means, so please pardon my ignorance.

I just bought a 87 328 with 23k on it. I took all your advice and had it checked by a 3rd party mechanic, and the major components were fine.

If the cars sits for more than a 2-3 days and then I start it, I hear a noise that sounds like two or more ball bearings spining a a chamber made of metal. At first I thought is was part of the exhaust clinking against something, but then upon closer inspection I heard the sound coming from "redish-orange" painted metal thing that sits in the middle of the engine (the thing that says "Ferrari" on it.)

The noise slowly disapates in 30 to 120 seconds, but it worries me. THe cars does not make the noise at any toher time (so far).

Is this common, or is this the first sign of some thing bad.

Any help would be appreciated.
