I'd make sure someone has not rotated the shift gate 180 degrees. I did this once, while cleaning out the shift box, and could engage reverse without pushing down since the "burr" was now blocking 5th. Remove the two large chrome Phillips screws securing the gate and give it a look. You can also see how much of the "burr" is worn down. Good luck. Hope it's something simple like this. |

It should not go into reverse without pushing the shifter down. My 78' goes right into reverse as the flange underneath the shift gate has been worn down but you should have to push the shifter down to get it into reverse. |

Mike, What Steve suggests is a simple test to see if things are working properly. It does sound like one or the other or maybe both are the problem. I would remove the plate and check it out as he suggests. It could save you a lot of trouble later on. Regards, |

My lever slides into reverse just as it slides into every other gear, no up or down movement on the lever is required. I'm getting ready for a 500 mile trip to Chicago for the concours at Oakbrook this weekend. I'll see how some of the other 308's go into reverse. I'll stick a post-it note on the dash to remind me "FIRST IS NOT REVERSE, DUMMY!!!!!" |

Mike F. -- there is a factory R lock-out as described by magoo. Either your shifting lever is stuck in the down position (try pulling it up -- it should move up/down about 10~12mm and be spring-loaded up) and/or the triangular stop on the bottom of the shift gate is significantly worn. |

Mike, Don't you have to push down and forward to get it into reverse? Maybe the plate is allowing you to slide into reverse too easily. I find that reverse takes some work to get into. |

My 355 Challenge car has one made out of aluminum but I don't know who supplies them. You might be able to make one if you are so inclined. I can send digital photos of mine of it will help you. |

Has anyone seen or know where you can get a shift gate with a reverse lockout for a 308? Or just the little flipper that could be screwed to the original gate. All my other cars have first where the reverse is on the Ferrari shift pattern, and I hate to admit (senility or stupidity) that I have selected reverse more than a few times!!! |
