Seems normal - my 82 GTS1 sometimes sounds like a 747 ideling on the runway at startup....

Both of my 308s don't make these sounds. I had my 78' make it once or twice last year in the winter time but never again after I changed my t-belts/access. belts.

It must be something in the air this summer ... my 308's started something similar, a light "graunch graunch graunch" sound when cold, going away shortly after starting.

Had my local specialist listen to every bearing with a stethoscope, couldn't find anything wrong with any of the bearings.

So now I'm following Kelly's approach .... leave it till it breaks or gets worse, then I'll know what it is :-)

My 308 GTS does the same thing. Definetly the alternator. Just start worrying if the noise doesn't stop.

I noticed yesterday that my car is doing this now. Its a '77 GTB. When first started, I get a medium/high pitched Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee sound. It goes away after about 45 seconds or so. Car runs great otherwise. The car has had a new waterpump, belts, cam and tensioner pulley bearings all within 3 years and 7000 miles.

Kelly, does your 308 do this? I want to not worry about it... but then again I dont want something crazy expensive to break. Next time in starting it from cold, im gonna have the wife start it while i stand by with a stethoscope and try to track it down.

Not Ferrari related, but I know what happened to the alternator bearing when it locked up in my American daily driver. Bearing locked up, belt kept running through the now stationary alternator pulley until the belt started smoking. Not good to smell smoke! Had to cut the belt off and limp home on battery power alone. Got a new alternator the next day.

I've seen it happen to everyone 308 I have ever heard start up cold. To me it's the alternator. Drive it till it brakes, then you'll know. HAHA

1.Water pump bearings worn. 2. Waterpump belt tensioner bearing worn. 3. Alternator bearings worn or alternator working hard due to low battery charge.
4.Timing Belt tensioner bearings worn. 5. Aircon idler bearing. The list goes on in that priority - take your pick ! The noise will go away due to heat but then the component will eventually let go!

I looked at an 83 308qv today and when the salesman started it uo it started whining it sounded just like a bad power steering pump then after a couple of minutes it went away and never came back and we ran the car for about 20 minutes anyone know what this could be? TIA
