Putting a smaller pulley wheel on the smog pump helps a great deal, of course it pumps faster and more volume.

Yes, the car currently has a CAT on it.

Does the car have a cat converter? HC are usually "burned" in the cat-- complete warmup of the cat conv would help...

The emission testing facilities up here in Vancouver, Canada are a joke. On my daily driver (which has to be tested, my Ferrari thankfully is exempt), I've gotten inconsistent readings every year. Logic would be that as a car gets older, it would pollute a little more (as systems decay). I've gotten worse results when I've replaced air filter/spark plugs/etc...one year, than when I've done nothing the next (and get better results). Sometimes if a car would fail, you'd drive out, go around the block for 15 min and test again and it'd pass!

Doug, Put two bottles of 104+ OCTANE BOOST in your gas tank and run her through again. You can find it at any auto store like Pep Boys. Worked for me. MAGOO

I have only owned the car a few months, but after 1800 miles I have not had to add any oil. The car runs great.

High HC can be caused by ignition problems or worn piston rings/valve guides (how much oil does your engine use?).

I have heard that letting your car really warm up, like driving for an hour or more before taking the test helps, but I don't know if it helps for hydrocarbons in particular.
Good Luck

my '84 308 QV failed the HC test at idle pretty bad and was pretty close on the loaded reading. It passed the CO test easily. Any suggestions on a remedy for the HC ppm?
