On my 77 308GTB, that port is left open to the engine compartment.

That's what I thought, Steve. Herbert, its odd that the vapours are only dumped into the Sinistra bank. And yes it would pollute more on this car when its off, because the fuel left in the float bowls evapourate out the air filter, the side vent and out into the atmosphere. Thanks guys for the help (as usual).

Peter -- I think that port is just left open to the local atmosphere (as shown in Fig. 18 page O14 of the 308GT4 WSM). On my later ex-'78 canister they extended this "hot air purge tube" and angled it downwards, but it was not connected to any hose.

On every other car in the world, the canister is connected on one end to the fuel tank vapors line and carburetor bowl vent connections on one end and to a purge line that connects to an intake manifold fitting or possible solenoid that connects to the intake manifold on the other. It has nothing to do with the AIR pump system. It's purpose is to store evaporated fuel vapors from the tank and carbs when the car is shut off and then burn them when the car is started. It is a fact that the cars produced today actually pollute more when shut off than when running.

It was Christmas for me yesterday, Mar. 30th, as I got the majority of my rebuild parts at the dealer. Included was the fuel vapour carbon canister. I've looked throughout all of my O.M./W.S.M/P.C. and nowhere can I find the connection to the "Hot Air Purge Inlet" (as seen in my photo, lower left-hand side, the connection with the white plug in it). Does this draw in hot engine-compartment air to activate it, or is it connected to the air-pump lines (which I don't have anymore)? This is a passive emissions system and is not connected to the air-pump system, so I don't know where its supposed to be hooked up to (if at all).
