I am in the process of this procedure because I've got oil leaking from this area as well. Can someone please explain how there is no oil coming out when I remove these bolts? My car is level on 4 ramps. I just don't get it. Why do these studs presumably go all the way into some kind of oil cavity? Thanks, Jerry.

Questions regarding this procedure:
1.Does anyone have the proper torque values for the engine mount bolts? I put these on by feel and there was a concern about over-tightening the connections.
2.How did you other guys hold up the engine while working on the mounts? I used a long piece of 2x4 with my floor jack under the pan. It worked but I was wondering if there was a better way.

I spent some time on this leak. My specfic problem were the rear motor mounts that hold the transmission end rather than the forward ones that mount to the engine block/oil pan area. I was able to get the drivers side rear mount off and found out that the leak I had was nothing more than accumulated oil/antifreeeze and accumulated engine crud that had been trapped in the hollow spacer assembly. I drained the area and then pulled off the motor mount and spacer and sealed it back together again with silicone gasket maker. I was unable to remove the passenger side rear mount (How does one remove the engine here?) as I could not get to the upper nuts and back them off (special tool required?) so I just loosened the lower nuts and drained the spacer and then retightened. No more leaks. Don

It looks like I've probably got this leak, at least on the front passenger side mount. I just finished up replacing cam belts & timing gear bearings, so had thoroughly degreased everything. So far only the seam where the motor mount joins the engine is showing some slight traces of oil. No real drops yet, so I'm just going to keep an eye on things.

Andy,

No lift required, just a good set of jack stands to allow you to get under the car. There was a discussion thread earlier on the proper proceedure for getting the car on stand which helped alot. Once I got under the car, I found that this was exactly where my leak was comming from.

Can the motor mounts be changed with out a lift? I have been wanting to change mine, but I dont have access to a car lift. Does anyone know where i can find a .jpg of the motor mounts in the engine so i can see what they are supposed to look like?

Don, I jacked the rear of the car up high enough so the oil would drain to the front of the pan. I had no problem when I removed them.

Don, Ed hit it. This is absolutely where it is. My 308 had the same problem and I repaired it by using Permatex NO. 2 on the threads of the bolts after cleaning them up with a solvent.

Ed, Thanx much. The fix sounds very doable but does all of the oil need to be drained out of the engine or tranny oil pan before doing so? Where does this oil come from to leak out? Don

That is a common problem of leaking where the mount bolts to the engine block. Remove the mount and bracket and then remove the bolts or studs from the block and clean the bore with some Brake Clean spray and coat the bolt/stud with RTV sealer and problem solved.

I have changed just about every seal I can without tearing the engine apart and degreased the engine and tranny, new sump seals for both engine and tranny. Just developed the strangest leak and would like some advice. On the bottom of both rear motor/tranny mounts I am picking up engine oil leaks. I am very sure that these leaks are not coming from above (cyl head ,etc) and the sides of the motor mounts are dry. It appears ( and I know this is crazy) that the oil is coming out of the motor mount itself where the 2 19mm nuts secure the black bent metal plate of the motor mount to the aluminum spacer block which appears to be sandwiched on to the studs set into the transmission housing casting. I have wiped the oil away several times, first times thinking it was something that I spilled. But it keeps reoccurring. Any thoughts would be appreciated Don
