IMHO, I think that the entire exotic used car market is built on unrealizable people's expectations. Buyers think they are getting a better deal with a less mileage car, sellers feel they need to sell for less because they had used the car, and then there are dealers, mechanics, uninformed owners with more money than brains, that inflate and fantasize about an utterly ridiculous service and maintenance schedules and pricing. Things for which their own owner's manual says otherwise. Many can't dare to believe that the car has about the same service and maintenance schedule than another car costing one tenth the price of their exotic. Most of these expectations are fuel by the same rarity that make their car an exotic. Even though many of its parts and subsystems are indeed mainstream components available for years in other makes as well. If you look into the engine compartment of most Ferraris, you will see a Mercedes, a BMW, or a Volvo, in there as well. Now, why would a Ferrari shop charge you more to service the same components than, less say, the Mercedes shop will service for half the money and with probably better results? Even worse, why would you pay twice for the same? Perhaps, the reason lies with those 7 letters ("Ferrari") sitting on the back of the car. I think it is beyond comprehension, but then, why worry about it. Let people pay what they think is right while keeping in check you own common sense.

It seems that low mileage is the only variable that distinguishes a Ferrari's price! Yes, I have read many opinions, that a buyer would rather have higher miles, but the truth is, more is asked for the low mi car.

I have seen many cars with low miles that didn't really show it, and the price was always more....even in Ferrari dealerships.

Even in this forum, I can't believe the problems that people are having with their low mileage 308, 328, etc., after only a month of ownership. They got there low mi car, paid more for it, and are still paying, just to get it running right.

I bought a 88TR 4 years ago, with 48K miles...only repair was the relay board ($600). Now I have 63K miles on it and hope to get around $50K. As a trade in it is worth $35K per dealer. The car is in excellent condition with a nice color combination; black/tan. For $35K I would keep it as my second Ferrari....might even be worth more parted out!

Here is a car that someone can buy, drive for another 15K miles before the major service, and enjoy. The 15K mile service, to me is a joke...I will be replacing the plugs, but without any engine smoke, I see no reason to go further.

So why are low mileage cars that valuable?
