Phil and Ric, THanks for the SB. It was good. I do have one additional question. The SB about the Pressure Plate says that the Modified pressure plate can only be used with the clutch release system that has been modified. Am I to assume that the OLD pressure plate with straight fingers DO NOT work with the modified clutch release system where the TO bearing is constantly in contact with the pressure plate fingers? |

I've been fiddling with an '80 308 that had some of the conversion done. they cut off the spring at the clutch pedal but didn't do anything else up front. the TSB says to replace the clutch pedal with the newer style that has the mounting point for the spring positioned such that the spring helps. instead of the spring pulling the clutch pedal up, it pulls it down. I wound up drilling a hole through the pedal and putting in a new spring. in the process, I replaced the clutch cable due to the adjusting nut end being completely useless. I'd love to meet the guy who did the hack job on it...plus find out why he left the clutch pedal stop in so the clutch wear was greatly accelerated since the pedal could not rise as the clutch wore. also freed up the nylon pulley along the cable route, and replaced the clutch/pressure plate with the valeo parts from george evans. after all that, the cluch effort is still not as light as my '89 328. I think the only way to figure out why at this point is to rig up some way of measuring the force required to turn the shaft on the bell housing. maybe it's as simple as needing a beefier spring on the clutch pedal. mitchell, I think you live near san francisco...if you want to hook up and compare clutch effort, let me know. I'm about 30 miles south of the city. |

If you have the "old style" (up to mid-79) clutch release, then updating to the "new style" (mid-79 and later) will help. I have a TSB that describes the process and parts required. |

OK I'll admit it. My knee isn't as healthy as it used to be 20 years ago. Has anyone been successful in lightening the clutch effort by replacing the small helper springs with stiffer ones? |
