I was wrong, Service Bulletin 10-18 is the one you're referring to.

Your car must have the intermediate style 45mm dia. seal referred to on the bottom of pg 4 under "ATTENTION".

Sounds like your mechanic knows what he's talking about. Machining the seal hole from 45mm to 47mm should be something any good machine shop can do. What'll be touchy is the depth of the hole so the seal is positioned correctly on the cam end.

That double lipped seal looks like it'd do a much better job than the single lip seal on my QV. I'm going to check the P/Ns for the seal & distributor flange on my QV to see if they're the same P/N as the 328. I suspect not, but it'd be nice to upgrade my seal as it's been a problem area that I'm not sure I've got right yet.

I came across the TSB on this issue at steve jenkins web site:

It appears that even the TR's were effected with the same issue as well.

2-1/2 weeks doesn't seem too long if the mechanic is being thorough & cleaning everything as he goes along.

I just finished replacing my timing bearings, cam belts, cam seals, cam cover gaskets, etc. I figgure it took roughly 2-1/2 or 3 weeks worth of labor. (All my spare weekends, numerous evenings, and 3 vacation days or 6 weeks or so.)

I'd drop by the shop every couple of days & just watch progress. It'll help you see what's really happening if he'll let you take a quick look at your car each time you drop by. If they have a 'no customers on the shop floor policy', then it's harder to judge progress.
RE: Distributor Seals: I just got replacement seals for my '82 308 QV from T. Rutlands a while back. They were single lip metal shell seals. I'm pretty sure the 328s, at least the 1st year or so, used the same seals, so I don't buy having to machine your housings.

I'd call T.Rutlands & discuss it with them. As I remember, the seals were pretty inexpensive.

I have a very early 86 and relaced my seals recently. What I remember is that the new seals are double lip instead of single lip. I got the seals from T Rutlands and they installed without much difficulty-- except of course for the difficulty of sliding the lips over a precision machined shaft without nicking the new seal! They are working just fine....

My housing could have been modified previously but it did have single lip seals in it when I disassembled.

Hi Folks:

My car has been in the shop for about 2 and a half weeks now going through a 30k service and a clutch job. (In my opinion that seems excessively long.) The mechanic is now telling me that the replacement distributor seals will not fit in the original housing. Apparently, Ferrari "upgraded" the housing towards the end of 1987. I have been told that the original housing can be machined to the current specs. Does anyone else have any experience with this situation?
