I changed to mechanical because I couldn't get a new electronic sender (from Superformance.co.uk) for 6-8 weeks. So I just mounted a mechanical gauge temporarily down by my left knee to the side "kick" panel. I planned to have those panels recovered anyway so I didn't mind putting a screw through it for a bracket. But now that I see how well the mechanical gauge works, I plan to replace my dash gauge with a mechanical. So far the closest I have found to the look of the veglia gauges is a VDO one - but the needle sweeps from the bottom instead of the top. So I'm still searching for the perfect looking mechanical oil pressure gauge. If I don't find it I'll buy one of the VDO series gauges. Here is a page about them: http://egauges.com/vdo_main.asp

Richard,Did you find a mechnical to fit in the dash or did you mount it elsewhere? |

Older dino motor has one of these valves too, though I have no idea what psi it is supposed to open and relieve pressure at. I would think that the only time your oil will be pressurized higher than normal is when it is still cold and you are driving at high rpms. And this is of course a bad idea! Once up to operating temps, I doubt the valve will ever need to open. BTW, just changed from the vdo electronic sender and veglia gauge to a mechanical set up a week ago. Major difference (positive) in oil pressure readings! Mechanical is the way to go. |

There's no damping on the spring, so the valve will open only when the pressure exceeds the spring, whether if its constant or for just an instant. So if its stuck, it will be closed during a warm idle (where the press. will be very low) and a sudden burst of acceleration will just go past it, through to the rest of the oiling system (and more than likely blow an old weak hose, or the O-Ring on the filter). |

Does the oil pressure valve slowly move with an increase in pressure or does it just go open/closed at a specified time? I'm confused on it's action in the engine. If it is stuck closed would oil pressure remain constantly high or remain low at idle and go too high during acceleration. |
