Right on Kelly. My daily driver, from top to bottom uses Baldwin (oil, air and fuel). Their quality and price can't be beat. P.S. a Baldwin match for your Purolator is: BF1177. I only found this out after you posted it in your fuel-filter thread (by using the filter cross-reference service on Baldwin's website). |

I looked at the WIX, they have a fuel filter that is made in China. I chose the Purolator made in Israel. But for oil I use only Baldwin B253. Even on my Ford F150. It's made in America, and it weights twice as much as a Fram or another oil filter I have ever used. My 2 cents. |

I own a 1977 308 GTB that I bought in October of 1977. Over the years I've seen three oil filter houseing spilt, one at speed and the other two at start-up. All three filters were after market. I'll spend a little extra $$ and buy UFI ! |

I use the mobil 1. It holds the oil up (at least it is suppose to like the oem and fram, after time it seems they all bleed down). I have had zero problems. Mobil 1 claims it is a direct replacement and list it that way in their cross reference material.I find if you leave your car sit for a long period you might want to remove the filter, fill it with oil, then start car.The inside of the mobil 1 looks like the fram. |

Thanks Verell; very good info. It will be easy enough to look into the open end of any filter...if you see perforations, you are looking at the filters center tube. If it is solid tube, it's standpipe version. I'll add whatever I fine here. |

Mike, 308/328 & other Ferraris with inverted (thread end down) oil filters require a stand pipe in the filter to work in conjunction with the check valve to retain oil in the filter. Otherwise there's a several second lag while the oil pump fills the filter before pressure starts to build. The following archived thread has a good illustration of a filter w/a stand pipe: http://server.ferrarichat.com/~ferrari/ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/3275.html Fram, UFI, & Baldwin are the only filter mfg's whose filters have a standpipe, even tho other mfg's claim their filter is usable on Ferraris. The standpipe/check valve combination really works well!! I just changed my oil filter (a Baldwin). My engine had been setting up for 6 weeks or so while I did some major work on it. The sump cover was off, & the engine had stopped dripping by the end of the 4th week or so. The filter still held over a pint of oil!!! Another advantage of the standpipe is that if the filter is holding oil, it keeps it from pouring out all over the bell housing when the filter is unscrewed.

Some one had a string on alternatives to the OEM filters for their cars. It's gone now, but one of the posters said he was using the Mobil 1 filters. There is a well done physical review of oil filters at www.scuderiaciriani.com that is well worth a quick scan or more. As an ex-Purolator chief Engineer, I can tell you the studies author is well informed on the subjet. Lacking any other info, I'm inclined to accept his assessment. Also, there is zero reason to believe that the OE filters are any better than any of those studied. Also; I did find a Purolator Premium Plus filter Part # HP1 L39001 in my local discount auto parts store for $6. It was listed for an F 328 and 348, thru 1994 as I recall. They also had the Purolator Performance Plus PPL 39001 for the same F'cars at the same price. I bought it for my 355, and can say that it is physically identical to the OEM part on the outer dimensions of the can ....BUT, I have yet to change oil and see if it screws on. The filter is a very common size/part number for lots of cars, and the filter test addresses it by part No. But if you get the chance, use the Mobil 1 filter, because the author rightly touts the benefits of the synthetic filter media over the paper in the others. It will trap more and finer particles and last much longer than paper. Although, I doubt that dirt capacity (life) is of much concern with the frequent oil changes that we all do. Clean oil to you all, Mike
