I've owned my 1987 328 since 1988. It has been relatively trouble free. Here is a list of what has gone wrong. The car was tracked from 1989 until mid 1996. I would do about 4 or 5 events a year.

Main engine seal. Just bad luck. Also happened on one of my Mercedes.

Hi/low pressure sensor on receiver dryer leaked. Replaced receiver dryer and sensor.

Spark plug wire holders have been replaced.

Clutch replaced in 1996.

Other than that it's just plugs, resealing valve covers, valve adjustment, timing belts.

Oil changes are done every 6 months but were done every other track event when car was tracked.

Coolant has been changed every other year.

Currently doing major service myself. I am replacing the water pump as PM. Oil pan seal had begun leaking oil so that is being replaced as well.

I make a point of driving the car at least every other week.

Christopher, I have a '84 308, but not much different from a 328 when it comes to maintenance. Over the past month, I've done my own maintanance such as plugs, engine oil, filters, coolant, and finished the gear box fluid this morning. Most of the stuff is pretty straight forward if you take your time.

Mine has been extremely reliable. Most of the complaints that I hear and read about are electrical ones.

Rob is right about the nickels and dimes if the car was not taken care of. I've learned this over the last three years. This gives you an added option. You can spend the extra money and get a car that is ready to go right now or pay a little less and really learn alot about your car.

I don't think the 328's have any bad year, I have a '86 and have no problems with it. What I'm discovering with Ferraris is you can spend a bunch of money if the car wasn't kept up over the years and you want the car to be perfect again. Overall the car can look and run great, but the more you own it, the more little details you want to fix and most of them on a Ferrari are expensive.

328's are known as one of the more reliable Ferraris.

87 is the middle year and not known to be worse than the two others - overall 328 is ver reliable. 15k is generally oil, gear box, brake fluid, fuel filter, air filter, plugs, flush coolant etc. The 30k adds timing belt and valve clearance. I might I have missing one or two things. 15k is normally done every 2-3 years and the 30k every 5.

I'm considering purchasing a 328 and I'm wondering about the what is generally required as maintenance and at what intervels? I;ve heard of 15k and 30k etc..etc.. but what needs ot be done? is there a web site that details this information?

Also, how is the 328 as far as mecahnical reliability? Is there anything specific about the '87 that makes it a bad year?!?

Thanks for nay help!
