Look in the engine bay around the differential on the passenger's side of the the car. You'll see a cone-shaped device attached to the side of the gearbox, this is your speedo sending unit. See if its plugged in. If its not, check to see if its loose/not screwed down. If it is, then the unit could've been damaged or just gave-up the ghost.

You could probably get that ring rechromed again. From what I remember new speedos aren't exactly cheap so it might not be worth it. I've heard them run in the area of $400 if I remember correctly. Usually they aren't hard to fix either.

I just had a complete 30k done and now my speedometer isn't working. Coincidence? I have yet to ask the mechanic. I was, however, thinking of getting a new one anyway because the chrome trim ring is starting to peal on the original one and it really bugs me. Anyone done a speedo change on a '85 308 lately? Where's the best place to buy one and how difficult of a job is it? Thanks!
