The steering rack can be refilled. No need for rebuild if only the boots are leaking. Remove cracked boots, drain all fluid from the rack, fit new boots and refill with 190-210 cc (6.4-7.1 fl.oz) BP Energrease FGL (G 4937) or equivalent. I am sure that it will be a lot easier to inspect and work on it out of the car. brgds Kurt |

P.S. You are correct there is not much room to work in that area. When the plate comes off the spring just pulls out without any problem. About 1/2inch long. I guess you could pump the oil but I found that the lack of work room and trying to control the oil flow was tedious. MAGOO |

Steve, I have had that plate off of the rack on my 79 308 GTS. I removed it to check the fluid because the car had been in storage 18yrs and I wanted to be sure. It was full within 1/2inch to the top. No problem in removing it. There is a coil spring that keeps light tension against the plate. You can try adding fluid at that area. With the L/F wheel off uae a plastic squeeze bottle that has a pointed top. Install a piece of clear hose and squeeze gently giving the oil time to seep in. Worth a try. MAGOO |

Steve, my 308QV rack has a slow leak and my Ferrari dealer told me they cannot be 'filled'. They are sealed and need to be sent out for rebuild. I trust my contacts at this dealer and I don't think they are trying to get at my wallet. I don't know if the 77 rack is different. I will be taking mine out myself next winter and having it sent away for rebuilding. Best of luck. |

I just came on a torn steering boot on my 77 308 and all of the mess it causes when the fluid comes out. So I got a couple of boots from Rutland and now I've got to install them . My question is "has anyone refill the Rack (80W-90W oil) and how do you do it in the car".I see a top plate on the Rack which has 2 bolts on it (hard to get at 2nd bolt)and I assume this needs to be removed to fill the Rack but if I take this off would I get any parts (springs or shims) falling out? Has anyone done this in the car. I assume you need to pump the fluid in the Rack. Any help would be appreicated. Thanks Steve |
