I agree, scrape as much off as possible w/plastic scrapers. I've got an air powered sprayer that I bought at Walmart. It is gentler than power washers, but does a nice job. I use the following solvents (in order of strength): a) Car wash detergent b) Dish detergent or simple green or something similar. c) Campbell Hausfield degreaser frm Walmart d) Parts washing solvent: (GUNK Concentrate in kerosene) Most parts stores have the GUNK concentrate in quart or gallons.

Simple Green is great. I have used in for years. It is reasonably priced too. |

I used plastic putty/spackling knives to scrape/peel off most of the grime. Had a huge pile of these grease shavings on the floor when I was done! I then used the Castrol cleaner. Worked pretty well. You can also buy the solvent used in parts cleaner tanks in 5 gallon cans from Napa - still a large quantity, but beats buying a 55 gal drum!

Mitchell, I am also cleaning the frame of my GT4. I tried all the water based products but they don't do as good a job. What I did was buy a big metal pan and poured varsol into it. Then I used various brass brushes and paint brushes to get the dirt and grime off. The varsol then just drips back into the pan. It works really well. Use stiff brushes or even a metal filler knife to strip off heavy deposits. |

I recently bought a Karcher pressure sprayer and use it for cleaning everything; car, gutters, even sprayed the moss off the limestone on the front of my house. I put my Merak on jackstands and sprayed the entire undercariage with Simple Green. Let it sit for about an hour and then used the pressure washer. Entire bottom of the car looked like new! You could probably do the same at your local spray car wash. Just go late at night with a roll of quarters! |

we use Simple Green in the shop everyday, it does a great job. Sometimes it may be necessary to scrape off the thicker deposits with a piece of wood or something. You can use mineral spirits for finishing and attacking the tougher spots. |

While the engine is out of my GT4, I want to take this opportunity to really clean the grime off the frame. It is covered with grease, oil, and grime. Simple Green is too weak to attack this mess. What stronger degreaser / solvent have some of you found to work? I do not want to use gasoline because it is too flamable and the fumes are not too healthy for someone working in a garage. |
