Steve: Thanks !

Peter: You made me cry like a little school girl. `

Chris -- "gooped" is just coating the various mechanical interfaces from the backplate of the brake pad to the brake piston face with the usual "disc-brake-quiet" stuff (I used a Permatex brand spray type with the appropriate masking where necessary). The problem is that eventually the goop gets extruded out from between the piston face and whatever it's pushing against (and the squealing returns). My gut feel is that a TR (with dual pistons on each side of the disc) is actually a little worse for this effect compared to a 308 (with only a single piston on each side of the disc) as: 1) the total surface area on the ends of TR brake pistons seem smaller than the 308 total area, and 2) the average path length the goop needs to travel to finally escape on a TR brake piston is much shorter than on the broad face of a 308 brake piston. The Wolverine stuff is, in effect, just a more solid goop that resists extrusion better (and has the other necessary properties of high-temp resistance and low compressibility)

Gooped: As to apply a slimy substance to a surface.

Goop: The slimy substance (also Goo, which I like to use).

Class dismissed.

Thanks for the info. What do you mean when you 'gooped '?

Goopless,

Its more than just the hard pads, although they are a big contributor (personally, I opt for organic pads on my other street cars just to extend the brake rotor life). Ferraris multi-piston, fixed-caliper brake designs just have a lot more opportunities for squeaks compared to the more conventional single-piston floating-caliper brake design. clyde would say: just be a man and live with it! (with apologies to those who dont know clyde, but those who do are smiling right now). My TR was squeaking horribly at the front when I first got it so I gooped things up, and this lasted OK for about a year, so I recently gooped again. Long-term, I plan to pursue a little different alternative suggested by Tony Palladino in one of his Forza ShopTalk columns when asked: What can you recommend for brake squeal between the brake pad and the piston. Tonys reply was:

(start quote)

We use two different products in my shop. The first is made by ITT Automotive which is a metal substrate sandwiched between a high-temp polymer. The second is a product called Wolverine, which is a sheet of vulcanized fiber with an adhesive backing that you can trim to size.

Ive found this on the Wolverine:

http://www.wolverine.epcorp.com/eaglewolverine/intro.asp

so you can get an idea of whats possible, but this is really the manufacturers site I havent yet found someplace to buy an appropriate hunk of it retail (if anyone knows a retail source please let me know).
Tony also posted the message below on the FerrariList regarding his preference for 308 brake pad brands (I dont know if hed have the same list for 348s, but I just thought Id pass it on for reference):

(start quote)

Top picks!
Repco {PBR} MM
Ferodo {AF}
Porterfield 4s Carbon Kevlar comp/street
Tony Palladino
ATE pads suck

(end quote)

Alternatively, Sam Sapienza also mentioned on the FerrariList that he had good success with something that is (amazingly) applied to the front of the brake pad (and soaks in). Sams message:

(start quote)

The miracle ointment that I was referring to a couple of days ago is this. This is the stuff that goes directly on the pad surface and soaks into the pad, it does not go onto the backing plate. I bought it at a dealership for $17, it came packaged with a can of Brake Kleen:

GRANITIZE, NO SQUEAL
GRANITIZE Products, Inc.
11022 Vulcan St. South Gate, CA

Comes in a 1 oz plastic bottle with the following claims:
*New & improved cold weather formula
*Smooths pad surface
*Eliminates squeal
*Will not affect life of pad

(end quite)

Sorry for the long message let us know what you try and how it works out.

Me too on my 89 328GTS. I thought the problem would go away with pad wear but 6 months later they're still squeaking. Love to know if different pads would make a difference.
