Chris -- Unfortunately, the taper on the pins is very slight so they have a strong self-locking characteristic (as you've found out). You'll probably have to drill out the bulk of the pin from the big end side (but don't break thru), cut off the threads from the little end side (to have a better-supported, flat place to whack), and then hope you can drive what's left of the pin out with a punch. If not successful, you may need to enlist some Machine Shop help -- good luck... |

I have successfully removed the steering column from the car (was not fun). But, I still cannot remove the pins from the upper u joint. I have tried pounding, heat, even a little cursing did not help. Does anyone know if this pin is only held in by friction or is it screwed into the shaft. Edward, thanks for the link, I will see if one of there u joints will work as a substitute. I also have not entirely given up on having the original one rebuilt. |

http://www.flaming-river.com/ Go to this site and I will bet that one of their joints will replace the original ones. |

Chris S. -- The upper u-joint pins are slightly tapered so like Greg said it's virtually impossible to remove them without removing the steering column from the car (so things can be properly supported for driving/pressing the pins out. It's also likely that they'll be destroyed/damaged in the removal process so you may need a new set. Good luck with the work... |

I haven't found anyone who rebuilds them but you should be able to track an upper joint down. The lower joint is even more $$$. What did you see in the upper joint that makes you think it is the culprit? Try Butch Hooper at Italian Design. He should have a used one for around $200 or so. To get the top joint out I would recommend removing the steering column. |

Hi everyone. I have a little too much play in my 308's steering that I have tracked down to the upper u joint in the steering linkage. This joint appears to be held on with a pin held in place by a lock nut. I removed the nut but cannot remove the pin. Is there some trick to removing this that I do not now, or is it just being really stubborn? Second, does anyone know if this joint can be rebuilt or does it have to be replaced. I called my local dealer and it is no longer available, and when it was it sold for $430 (for a u joint!). I have not yet started looking at all the usual suspects (parts houses), I was hoping it could be rebuilt (if I can ever get it off the car). Thanks for the help. |
