Even the small glove box ones don't last long so its not hard to see why bonnet ones often fail.

here is the best tip...buried in the J whitney autoparts catalog..yes don't snicker...there is a cheap but well designed bracket that holds up a flaccid and depleted gas strut...also go to pep boys and they will find you a cheap replacemnt strut ( bring the old one with you )

I have a 86 mondial and have the one strut with a locking button - I don't know how a normal strut could hold such a heavy lid.

sorry, I have a 79 GTS with two holder uppers, hood struts I think they are called. They are of poor quality and half the time the lid falls on my head when I am looking in the engine bay. I have tried silicon spray...everything, still would like to change them to some inexpensive reliable truts...any ideas?

you sure you want to replace with the gas filled shocks? they don't last very long...there are some good pictures of the mounts on page 50 & 51 of Bluemel's Original Ferrari V8 book...they are welded on.

Has anyone attempted to replace the engine lids single "holder upper" with a dual shock type found on later model 308's or 328's? I have a 78 308GTS with a single spring loaded rod in the middle of the lid. If anyone could send me or post a picture of the mounts required in the engine bay for the dual shock type mounts, I would appreciate it.
