on your question regarding the manuals I have seen threads where people point out the manual is wrong or misleading - it seems that Ferrari has always had a poor translator working on their manuals - either he or she does not have a good knowledge of english or italian or they don't have a mechanical backgroud - maybe both :-)

Doody - I was joking as well :-) .I think the other threads there is a good discussion on how diff brands of synthetics do not diff much. If you recall Ferrari used to recommend mobil 1 or AGRIP - it all has to do with F-1 sponsership. for the last couple of years they have been with shell. I would use what ever sythenthic (castrol/mobil 1/ shell) is on sale at the local kmart or walmart - just my opinion.

TomD - are you saying that ferrari does not write their manuals? are they subbed out to some other company as a "have to do - but don't want to do" task and are generally to be viewed with skepticism?

i was just being facetious re: the enzo remark - but is there something deeper about f-car manuals here that one sould know?

i did find some other threads in the archives re: oil, but they seemed to mostly about much older cars, so wasn't sure of the applicability to a 355, hence the question. maybe i just found the wrong threads :-)

B) Enzo did not write the manual - as has been discussed in other threads - any comparable oil will do the trick

excellent question, john. it would work either way - it just depends on how the good folks at the factory designed it to deal with the 1/8" to 1/4" difference. the manual makes no mention of this. anybody know?

Just a follow up 355 question to Doody's:

When you check the engine oil level, do you merely just dip the stick into the hole, or do you need to screw it on completely and then unscrew it to check for the correct level?

Many thx.

Doody: answer is "yes" to your (A)

ladies & gents:

my 355 seems like it might be a bit shy on oil. i had a few questions pop once i started poking around. excuse the newbieness of them. i checked the archives, but i seem to be the first person so incredibly stupid to not be able to figure these out on my own ;-)

(A) as best i can tell, one inserts the oil via the same outlet one checks the oil. i've never owned a car previously that did this (there's always been a dipstick and a separate fill cap!). before i do something REALLY embarrassing i just wanted to get a final confirmation that it's the same hole for check & fill :-)

(B) the stickers and docs say to use Shell 5W40. any reason not to follow enzo's orders?

thanks!
doody.
