CLEAN ALTERNATOR W/MINERAL SPIRITS --------------------------------------------- When I took my alternator to a rebuilting shop, the owner told me that mineral spirits won't hurt the windings, & will take the crud out. Blow it out with an air hose afterwards & let it dry out overnite. He also said that kerosene based solvents leave a gummy deposit that sooner or later causes trouble. REPLACE THE BEARINGS WHILE YOU'VE GOT IT APART. -------------------------------------------------- They're mighty cheap insurance, & the new bearings are higher quality due to greatly improved metallurgy, & manufacturing precision. I think it was $15 or $20 for a pair of sealed bearings. |

The altenator is quite simple to disassemble and cleaning parts separately will do the job (if you just blast it with cleaner, all you're doing is stuffing the crud further into it and yes, this can cause problems). With it apart, you can test the rectifiers yourself, other than that, there's not much else to them.

I would probably send it to a rebuilder to have it tested and maybe freshened up. It wont cost very much and chances are, after you spray stuff into it, thats when it wont work and you'll find that out when you fire it up. |

I have my alternator out while I am replacing my cam drive pulley bearings and I have a couple of questions. It has been working flawlessly since I have owned the car for 8 years, I am assumming it is original. It has quite a bit of grease and junk on it that I have wiped off. If I spray it with electric motor cleaner will it destroy or hurt any of the parts. I would like to get some of the gunk off and out of it. Even though it is working fine should I have it looked at or rebuilt or leave well enough alone? Rob |
